Not surprised at all but I find it interesting. How are they going to write him "away"? Was his contract renewed? For one year or two years? In one of the articles floating around was that the contracts with MH are yearly now or have been for a while.

To avoid further cluttering with episode thread for Rule 91, I'll switch over here for this one.
I now think that S19 will be the last. My previous assumptions that they might be able to carry with Gibbs as a part-time former agent with McGee leading didn't take into account Bishop leaving, I assumed she would become the SFA. The mothership is now wounded staffing-wise because it's obvious from the episode that Gibbs isn't returning to the agency, and may very well just be part-time "retired agent" for side stories.
Katrina Law was contracted to recur on two episodes for S18 with an option to become full time if the show was renewed. We don't know if she actually took that option, and even if she did, the MCRT will still be down an agent now. Right now it looks like it'll be McGee leading, Torres SFA, and Knight. So either they run one agent short, or have to bring in a new probie regardless. That's assuming that Knight will be there, if she didn't take the option, the main team will only have McGee and Torres to start with.
Combine an unexpected main cast departure, an unknown status for Knight, and a time slot shift, and it's not looking so great.
I'm not writing it off personally, I'll watch to see what happens during the hiatus period regarding cast, and watch the premiere to see what happens there. Beyond that I may or may not continue watching, that's a choice I can't make until further cast news and how things work out in the premiere, but the loss of Bishop has caused me to start considering my own future watching NCIS, which wasn't the case until the very end of the episode and the subsequent check of Emily's Instagram with confirmation she was actually leaving, and whatever was happening with Odette wouldn't be something to be resolved somehow next season.
That said, did anyone else feel like Rule 91 might have been written prior to the confirmation of the show being renewed? Ultimately, it felt like it could have played out as a workable *series* finale rather than a season finale if they had needed it to, the explosion could have simply been removed from the ending, and Gibbs boats off into the sunset. It certainly gave me the feeling that it was written with the possibility of being used as a series finale.

What I'm hoping for in season 19 is the return of the darker Nick. Like he was in his first season with the show. Now that his "love" has left, perhaps he will brood more and not be the "DiNozzo" clown replacement they had turned him into.
Also, just to state it one more time, I would love for them to replace Kacey with a more mature, even older, Asian actress that can bring a better scientific vibe to the show and the 'occasional' comedic kick, instead of the lame comic drivel they have been sticking us with. Also, I think another character change could provide a better balance with Palmer. I like Dietzen and his portrayal of Palmer, but their constant, predictable attempts at humor is growing old, even for me.
I can see the full departure of Ducky very quickly and with a possible reduced roll for Harmon, though I do believe he will return to the agency, I also feel this might be the end of the series. This isn't ER, or even Gray's Anatomy, with plug and play characters. This series was based on the character of Gibbs. If Harmon feels he's done all he can with the roll and wishes to leave, let the series end with his exit, don't drag it out with the ghosts of Kate, and Tony, Ziva, and Shephard, Ducky, Abby, and Gibbs haunting the bullpen. Much less those of Franks and Dianne.
I wait to see what will happen.

When the "funeral outfit" photos first got posted, my first thought was they were having Ducky die. He was only in-person for one episode this season, and two (unless there were others I missed) brief video call appearances.

I think, maybe, if this had been the series ender, they might have just put the nail in coffin with a fade to black as gibbs floated facedown... When I saw the ending, my first thought was that Gibbs was faking his own death to go after the serial killer with Marcie publicly "grieving"... Especially with the little smile and laugh right before the *KABOOM*. unlike some others, I didn't find it totally out of the realm of possibility that Gibbs could survive, as the rear of the boat exploded and could have thrown the skipper/pilot forward into the water... although he may, once again, suffer some hearing problems being that close to ANOTHER bomb.

@ pkidelirium & pdsmith & bobinvalencia...
I really liked what you said in your posts, but at the same time they made me very sad... 😞
what with the day/time change, and the cast “shake-up” it seems to me that NCIS is on a downward spiral...
I’m really at a loss for the words to describe how I feel about the direction NCIS is heading in, which is unusual for me... but you guys said it so well, so I won’t try...
it’s just too bad that the show couldn’t end on a high note, instead of dragging it out until it doesn’t even resemble its original self...

I have to wonder if perhaps Emily's decision to leave was based on the insider/advanced knowledge that the cast has regarding what was happening with Mark Harmon's deal. Without Gibbs at all the show would be a total sinking ship, and apparently the only reason he negotiated some kind of contract to return was because CBS would have ended the show if he left outright. Career-wise, knowing something like that (and that was a while back now that the public found out about MH's discussions, the cast probably all knew well before that), opting to leave on your own terms before the ship *actually* sinks would be a smart move, rather than spend another season just to sink into cancellation with it.

I know there are a lot of people who still enjoy the series and I don’t want to wish it away for their sake. However, maybe it would be a good thing if season 19 was the final one. 19 seasons is a lot, a lot more than many shows get. The series has of course seen many cast changes, among countless others. It really seems almost like a different series. Especially, when you compare it to the early seasons. I personally think 19 seasons is too many. I think by 12-13 it would have been better to end on a strong note. Everyone has their own opinions of course, this is just my two sense. The longer a series runs the more you will likely see cast changes, writing that is not as strong as it was in the beginning, repetitive storylines, far fetched stories, continuity errors, etc. Also, some people just as a whole do not enjoy it as much as they once did when the series began. Personally I would rather see a series end when the writing, etc. is still strong, and the show still feels like the same show. Than have it continue with many cast changes, and as a whole has the feel of a different show. Again, I know many still enjoy NCIS, so for your sake I am not wishing it away. This is just my two sense.

I also kind of have the sense that this will be the last season. We really don't have clear inside knowledge but one of the stronger theories is that Mark Harmon (who will be 70 in September) came back so the series would not be cancelled. I doubt when the show started any of them thought it would go on this long. If this is true I am glad for the people who work on the show, the pandemic has certainly been rough on the industry and it gives them a year which hopefully will be more normal.
I totally agree with this. Any long running series that I have watched from beginning to end (M*A*S*H, NYPD Blue, Law and Order, Hill Street Blues, Cheers to name a few) were not the same at the end as they were in the beginning. The characters don't hold any mysteries anymore and the writing is not as sharp. NCIS has followed the same pattern, although they did knock it out of the park with Arizona last season.
I will be watching next season to see what happens.
