Calicocurls,
I changed the font and size of your fantastic post for easier reading (for some of us 🙂). Oho, I just now found where one can change the font size! Let the joy be unconfined! I'll try to make sure I use 14 from now on...I think that's what I'm using now. Thanks for bringing my attention to the miracle of font sizes, hee hee hee! I might even get brave and use emojies one fine day!

calicocurls please don't use just one external as backup alone. Split it to two at least. There's nothing worse than to find out that your backup is corrupted and you lose a bunch of important stuff you can't get back. (learned the hard way) I do have backups of backups because of that. Thank you for this, jessielee, it's great advice which I hadn't thought about. My little backup thingie did croak a few years ago and I'm on my second device so yep, I'm going to look into a second backup for Mac but I don't have a port for the IPad so I guess it's just going to take its chances. I'm not a fan of the Cloud; might come around to it some day but not now. I don't have a lot of stuff on my computers and I cull the junk from time to time, but on the other hand I'd hate to lose some of my pictures. Others, not so much...

hi again!
well, I thought I'd have some good news to report, "but"........
I got really lucky and found an iPad Air 4th gen at Best Buy last week, available for delivery by December 14th - so I ordered it! I got even luckier when it arrived early!! it was behind my door yesterday, December 9th, before noon...
so, I got down to business and started the install... it went relatively smoothly, considering I'm not a genius when it comes to computers - my "computer savvy" only scratches the tip of the iceberg... another veryyyy lucky thing is that all of those pictures and other saved stuff I thought I'd lost actually transferred from the dead iPad to the new one!!! Cloud apparently had stored it and retrieved it to the new device, because I was able to provide info I had from the "vintage" iPad... it was great to have it, but kinda' "creepy", too, to know that my personal "stuff" is stored in some magical, invisible file in the sky!
now here's the "but" I'm afraid the battery is faulty... after plugging it in overnight the battery icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen showed it to be full at 100%, but after reading something, e.g. posts here on the Board, e-mails, etc. OR... trying to type something like a post or an email, the screen freezes up and goes blank within a few minutes!! it'll come back after about 10 seconds, but I have to start all over again... the battery icon now shows the battery with a red bar as if it is empty!!
I checked all my settings and tried the AutoLock in both on and off positions, but the problem continues...
so, there's two things that I can think of: 1) either I'm doing something wrong with my settings, OR 2) I have a brand new iPad with a bad battery!
I've gone online to try to get an answer, but can't seem to find anything specifically related to this problem...
soooo, I'm turning to you, Board Buddies, to see if you can help me... I really dislike going online to Apple Support and having a "live chat", but I may do that this weekend...
in the meantime, I'll wait to hear back from you...
I just hate the idea of having to return this new iPad and starting all over again... I was so happy - until I wasn't...
Please, can you Help Me!!??

Nas, you are braver than I am, not taking it back with an error this early. I am lucky that I am near an Apple store so can drop in whenever I want. (Did need to book a spot due to Covid restrictions) Had two experiences recently. First my iPad Pro 11, cough, cough, probably got a bit damp in my rucksack, I got caught in a very heavy downpour, happened before, one of the delights being a cyclist but I have always had the clothing and a new rucksack now! I did everything to try and fix the Pro but was just left with a black screen and a voice telling me what to do to reboot, after resetting to factory settings, still nothing, so I took it in to the shop. They did try one other thing but then a brand new iPad was brought in from the back, no questions asked, no attempt to send it away to fix, as I was expecting and I left the store a happy person. Second time my new iPad mini was showing completely different storage space than the other iPads and I only went with the smaller storage iPad due to the others not using much. In store they did not really know why, so I did do an hour on the phone with two different experts, problem not solved. I then reset the mini for a third time and set it up from the old iPad mini, rather than the new iPad Pro, problem solved.
I take it you are using the new plug and cord that came with the new iPad to charge it, rather than the old set? Fingers crossed you get it sorted, glad you are using Cloud, even if you did not know it. Apple are sneaky, it certainly keeps me using them due to the amount of things I have in their cloud and I don’t think I could be bothered to back it up somewhere if I leave them.

bravery has nothing to do with it, mch... I've just decided not to let this issue ruin my life or upset me completely - Maxine, on the other hand is furious, but I'm trying not to listen to her...
since I posted last night I have absolutely decided that I am going to return the iPad, as it is definitely defective... it didn't charge up overnight and it's still going dead after just 2 minutes of use... it's under warranty for a full year, but I'm going to deal with the problem immediately... I do have an Apple store close by, but I've decided it's probably best to deal with Best Buy, as that's who I bought it from... unfortunately, I have this mobility problem and can't just jump in the car and take it back; I had it delivered, so I'll see how they want to deal with it - I'm hoping their Customer Service is cooperative...
yes, I used the new cord and cable that came with it - the one for my "vintage" iPad isn't even compatible... Apple is a great product, albeit more expensive than others, but in sticking with it I didn't lose all my "stuff" - thanks to Cloud!
thanks for your reply - and, please, keep your fingers crossed for me...

Glad you are sending it back for a new one. Much easier doing it this quickly, rather than waiting to see if it right’s itself. USB-C plug now, then?

just got off the phone with Best Buy Customer Service, and they were most cooperative - thank goodness!
they have agreed to send me a replacement iPad for the defective one, and it will be delivered on (or before) December 27th... this iPad Air 4th gen is a popular item this time of year and is back-ordered right now, but as long as they have agreed to replace it, I'm satisfied... they are also sending me a shipping label so that I can return the defective one; I will do that right after I receive the replacement...
hopefully, this whole process goes off without a hitch... again, fingers crossed! it's unfortunate that this happened in the first place, but as the saying goes, "It's always something!"
and yes, it's the USB-C plug now...

I am so glad that your pictures all came back - they were stored in the cloud! Priceless!
Glad that Best Buy is working with you. When you get the new ipad make sure you have it set to automatic back up!

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but please remember to log yourself off of any accounts on the defective one before you return it.
