Just a few thoughts... That basement wall didn't need blowing out; some well-placed swings with a sledge hammer would do the trick, especially if Gibbs designed the wall without rebar so he could tear it out when needed. WHY he would do that is the question, but hey, the guy's a bit of a whack-job so maybe he did it that way for exercise and then after the boat's out he could practice his wall-building skills. Also, it seems that I recall that the backyard sloped down and away from the back of the house which would make an exit from the basement easier to create. I think.
I'd bet that Mark Harmon is disappointed to read that so many folks are saying they'll not watch NCIS anymore because Gibbs is gone. He's always maintained that the show was about the team and NCIS, NOT about Special Agent Gibbs, so to know that folks are abandoning the show must hurt some. As for me, I kinda lost interest in Gibbs when the writers added the Shannon/Kelly backstory and turned a really interesting character into a glum one-note bore so his leaving isn't going to cause me to stop watching. I've missed that Gibbs smile all these years and honestly he smiled more in this last episode than he has in years, it seems like!
As for Parker kicking in Gibbs' front door, it made sense to me because Gibbs had left for a TRIP and would leave the door locked during his absence. Who will get Gibbs' house? Perhaps it'll get written out OR someone will move in. I vote for Jimmy, Victoria and Jimmy's Mom to move in, and they can make the basement into a GREAT playroom for Victoria. But really, I'm just gonna go with the flow as far as the rest of the season goes. Personally I so utterly loathed Ziva and to a lesser extent DiNozzo that ANYthing is better than when they were on the show so I'm actually having a rather good time watching and I'm content to continue doing so, unless the writer's try to do a 'Ziva/Dinozzo Lite' version with Knight and Torres in which case, yeah, I'll be done. I really hate put-down humor and Z&D were awfully unkind characters.
So overall, I'm going to hope that Parker lightens up, Tim becomes the team leader because I'm one of the few who thinks the character CAN lead, Knight and Torres stay 'just pals/co-workers' and don't get all goo-goo eyed over each other and Palmer stops being so...whatever. When that character is well-written he's excellent. I was a HUGE fan of the Fab Four and I don't mean characters, I mean seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4, when Kate had off-screen dates, (no inter-office romances!) DiNozzo wasn't quite so horrid as in later seasons, Abby wasn't an idiot toddler and Gibbs wasn't grim to the brim all the time. I think the evolution of McGee from nervous Probie to who he is now was pretty well done but he should've kept his computer skills up to date...And I really hope for some genuine, witty humor. Is that too much to hope for? Alas, probably yes...

Well crap... I had a long post and lost it. I'll see what I can remember.
I really liked the episode and thought it could have been a good finale. If the final bookend was McGee returning to the squad room and telling Knight and Torres to grab their gear, that would have been the perfect ending for the show. However, I'm really glad it isn't the end. I still really like the cast and I want to see it carry on.
Each week, I'm finding that I like Knight more and more. She's witty and the banter with Torres is always fun. The conversation about her hypothetical husband had me laughing and I loved the call back at the end when they arrested the husband and she said that this was exactly why she didn't trust her hypothetical husband. She and Torres have great chemistry.
I'm very glad that we got to see Gibbs' say his farewells to most everyone. His hug with David (and David's misty eyes) was the first time that someone was chopping onions in my house. I liked his last conversation with Leon and the ceremonial disposal of the flip phone. I agree with Leon, it had a good run. I only wish that we had a scene between Palmer and Gibbs but I get that there was only so much time in the episode.
Mostly I'm really glad that most of the episode was Gibbs and McGee together in beautiful Alaska. I've always enjoyed when Sean and Mark were on screen together. They play off each other so well and they had so many fantastic scenes over the years that it felt fitting that they were together at the end. When Gibbs and McGee were hugging at the end (and Sean had tears in his eyes), I lost it. I don't think they were doing much acting in that scene.
I liked that they solved the case as a team, with Gibbs and McGee in Alaska and the rest working in DC. I was worried when I saw the previews with Gibbs getting the gun from the guy on the ship. I was worried that he was going to continue down his self-destructive path and take out the Sonova lady, which would end up with Gibbs either on the run or in jail. It actually made me appreciate the trick they employed to get Eberhart's conspirator even more. That was one of Gibbs' trademarks - he always seemed to be more clever than the bad guy and this was no different. Plus Marcie got to help take down the husband, which I'm sure Pam appreciated!
I really liked that at the end, Gibbs insisted that McGee arrest him. I appreciate that Gibbs was protecting Tim and that McGee (half-heartedly) argued against it and did it anyway because it was the right thing to do. But he still complained about it the whole time.
The one thing that I'm disappointed they didn't wrap up was the part from last episode where Lemere taunted Gibbs and told him all about how they were the same. Sure, on the surface, both are killers and Gibbs has been quick to apply permanent justice to some of the bad guys (Michelle Lee, Harper Dearing, and Sergei Mischnev are just three that pop to mind right away but I'm sure that there are more. I think the difference is that Lemere killed for money. Gibbs killed out of a sense of getting justice for a crime. I feel like Gibbs' visit to Shannon and Kelley's grave was his way choosing to do better. He had to walk away from the job to break the destructive cycle so that he could be someone that Shannon and Kelley would admire.
Like calicocurls I think that Tim can lead the team. Although like Gibbs said, he needs to find his own rhythm. He has the basics (he's a good investigator), the rest will come with time.
I appreciate that Parker was more likeable this episode and that he put getting the Sonova CEO ahead of taking in Gibbs on the trumped up charge. And thanks to Fornell for putting in the good word for Gibbs! I just really hope that Parker isn't going to swoop in and take the team lead position when it ought to be McGee's.
And with that, I think this post is longer than the original. lol

I agree. It would have been a great way to end the series.
I also like the cast, I like Gary Cole and hopefully he fits in well. But as I said in an earlier post, this is almost like a different show than it was in the early seasons. I will watch and see how it evolves.

I will watch and see how it evolves. But what show that's been on for even half as long as NCIS hasn't changed? Shows that don't change get stale and are cancelled. The question is now, does the audience like the changes? I can say that there's a lot from the early seasons that I don't miss at all (creepy Ducky anyone?) I'm with you luckysmom , I'm still enjoying the show and I'll be happy to watch it's evolution.

I have to concur with both luckysmom and @llyans view. I am going to continue to watch it and if I lose interest then I will catch it on whatever cable station its going to be on

Saying good-bye to Gibbs has various affects on everyone, cast, crew, and fans. Many of those affects have been shared by those who have wished to share them, either publicly or privately.
I will add that I will miss Harmon on the show, and as much as he may wish to insist the show is about the team, it is clear to 'most' everyone, the show is about L. J. Gibbs. With that, we now get a Gibbless NCIS, and even with the introduction of that idea with "Muscial Chairs", and the reduced role Gibbs had at the end of last season, the true test will now come as Harmon is no longer with the show.
The show was good, but felt a little rushed. I liked the individual moments Gibbs had with Ducky, Vance, Torres, and McGee. While Palmer did have a unique relationship with Gibbs, it wasn't too much of a disappointment they didn't have a personal moment, and it gave more time for Gibbs with McGee.
The case being solved was just a vehicle for Gibbs to go, so I found myself not that invested with it.
I'm hoping with a new direction, that Binder's promise they will go back to the case of the week now will be true and we can get a series of shows that will allow the new team to grow and gel into something the fans will like.
And now that we know how Parker will join the team, it seems clear with his dismissal from the bureau opens him up to a job with NCIS, the questions now are;
How long does it take McGee to move to Gibb's desk? (It will always be Gibb's desk)
Who becomes Senior Field Agent? (While most will probably say Torres, I'm thinking Parker's years of experience makes him the most logical choice, though maybe not the most popular. No, I don't think Vance will make him team leader.)
Will they take on a new probie? (I hope they do. I like the dynamic of young trainee and grizzled vet teamed up together. Yes, that makes a team of 5, but I thought it worked first time, though many here didn't like Quinn, I loved her. And miss her.)
Will they force a relationship between Torres and Knight? (I hope not)
Will there be any relationships for the characters outside of Tim and Delilah. (That I would like to see.)
I gave this one an 'A'.

Posted this on the wrong thread. Sorry.
I've watched NCIS in it's CBS run since 2010. I got hooked on it by watching the USA Network in the hospital for 3 weeks. Despite all the cast changes (and there were *many*) I still stuck with it because Gibbs is, was, always will be the core of the show. That said, I will see it through to the end. I've collected all 18 seasons on DVD. Not gonna stop now. Last season was preparing us gently for this, as I like to call it NCIS : The Next Generation (for those Star Trek fans out there).
There are plenty more stories to tell. Question is will they be given the chance to tell them? Time (and the ratings) will tell. I mean let's be honest, MH just turned 70. I'm sure he's ready to retire. Since they left Marcie in DC, I imagine Gibbs will be back for an arc that involves her. Probably Feb. sweeps or May finale time. McGee needs to lead without a Gibbs net. Torres is back to square one. Katrina is brand new and we haven't even scratched the surface on Kasie. Even Abby got more character development than her and this is her 4th year in. (end of 15-19).
IMO they made a mistake moving it to Mondays. I know they wanted to pair it with Hawaii (only saw the pilot) but putting it against Monday Night Football and now the MLB playoffs won't help. Tuesday was free and clear. I will still record it, watch it give it a chance. Am I happy MH is gone? No. But I have invested in the other characters enough not to abandon ship. Can't say I'll like every episode, but I will make an informed opinion.

I read/heard more than once, “Don’t count Gibbs out!”...
and that’s probably very true in light of the trend I see lately... fr’instance: ~~ I read actress Kate Walsh is returning to Grey’s Anatomy after her character spun off to another series... I never watched either show, but this is one example of a “character returns”
and......
~~ after years of being gone William Petersen and Jorja Fox returned in a whole new iteration of CSI...
I have no idea how many other actors are returning to shows they left once upon a time; these are just the two I’m aware of recently...
so, in spite of all the “fond farewells” and “well wishes” to Mark Harmon, I’m betting all his fans won’t have to wait too long to see his face again...
🤔 maybe there’s already a spin-off in the works entitled “Gibbs, Alaska”, where he’s working P.I. cases a la Jesse Stone... eta: but instead of having a girlfriend 20 years his junior, Marcie will be with him... 😉
just a thought...

Did Gibbs officially resign? If not, he’s still an agent unless Vance fired him. Just like Jenny did - put him on vacation/PTO. Leaves the door open for him to come back.
I posted earlier I’d love a spin-off with Gibbs & Fornell as PI’s.

oh, I remember you posted that, gibbsgirl...
that’s a a great idea! Fornell has nothing going for him right now, so a move to Alaska would be good for him...
and seeing the “odd couple” in Alaska would be entertaining - at least for a few weeks, before they killed each other!

I haven't typed anything about this episode until now because I was trying to figure out what I thought of it. Now 3 days to considering the ins and outs of a TV show may be overthinking the whole thing, but I simply couldn't figure out how I felt.
The case was nothing much. By now it was overlong and starting to become less and less important to the show. I did nail who did it (the husband from episode one) but by the time they revealed the truth I was beyond caring.
Losing Gibbs is both a blessing and a curse. He has been the glue that held the show together for 18 years and there is no replacing him. I presume that Gary Cole will be given the job of playing the gruff old guy, but no matter how hard he tries he won't be Gibbs. That's a curse. But without Gibbs, the rest of the team is going to have to step up and help take the lead in the program. That means the actors will have to do good, not just competent, jobs. More, it means the writers are going to have to do a good, not just competent, job of addressing the characters in the remaining episodes. That can be a blessing for characterization, for development, and for the actors. Hopefully it happens.
And, yes, I expect to see Gibbs again (and sooner rather than later if the ratings tank). It was wonderful to see Ducky finally and apparently he'll be around next episode also. I gave the episode a "B" because of the lack of a decent case.

I posted earlier I’d love a spin-off with Gibbs & Fornell as PI’s. Since Gibbs never does anything by the book, the simple assumption is that when he dropped his phone into the coffee cup, he resigned, or retired if you wish.
Vance telling Torres that Gibbs didn't want his badge back made his leaving official. Therefore, the conclusion that can be reached is, Gibbs is no longer an NCIS agent.
Yes, he left in season 4 and returned, but that was just part of the story line for Harmon and whatever he had going with the Donald and the studio at the time. Now Harmon wants to be gone for good, so he's gone, and we move on.
Could they maneuver it later to bring him back to the agency? Of course they could, it's TV. Just like bringing back a soap opera character who died fifteen years prior because the actor wanted to leave.

@pdsmith. True but did Vance officially put in any paperwork work? Gibbs thought Jenny did but she put him on PTO. I’m just saying this since, just like with Jenny, it’s an excuse for the writers to let Gibbs back on the team in the future.

I’m just saying this since, just like with Jenny, it’s an excuse for the writers to let Gibbs back on the team in the future. Shooting a scene with Vance sitting at his desk signing a bunch of papers would have been final, but mostly boring for the audience. Telling Torres Gibbs didn't want the badge was much more emotionally fulfilling for the audience.
Is it open? Of course it is. That's story telling in TV, or even movies or novels. Leave everything hanging in case you want to bring a character back. I was criticized yesterday by my sister for killing off my Main Character in a Novella she critiqued for me. She wants me to write two more, one focusing on the two main characters and a supporting character. Which means dropping the epilogue from this novella and saving it for the last one. Not sure I'll do that, but it's an option.
So, is Gibbs gone? Yes, until he no longer wants to be gone.

Glad you brought up CSI. There's been a good number of posts about the Gary Cole role. I have a feeling they may do what they did when Petersen left and Fishburne joined. They didn't make his character the boss and even started him out as a newbie, but within a couple of episodes everyone was turning to him with things that should have been directed at Helgenberger. I really hope they don't do that here, but it won't surprise me.
As for the episode, it was mostly enjoyable. I agree with the people who say this felt like it could have been the final episode of the series and would have been a good ending. As for the case, copper mines certainly aren't good for the environment, but the impact was greatly exaggerated in the episode - if it was that severe then northern Michigan would be a barren wasteland and it definitely isn't. It's also hard to believe that the Alaskan government wouldn't be more thorough in their own environmental study.
