I thought I only heard one gunshot. If it hit Abby, I don't think Reeves got hit. Not seeing him in any of the previews really means nothing as past experience tells me the previews can be somewhat misleading.

so, after watching “One Step Forward” tonight I have this to say:
these are random thoughts about the show, and in no particular order...
first of all, after checking out who the ep’s writer is, I’m not surprised it was a flaming pile of drek... imo, Gina Lucita Monreal has written some of the dumbest NCIS episodes ever...
why does the daughter decide NCIS should handle her mother’s unsolved murder? makes no sense!
the case, as Jack told Leon, was beyond the jurisdiction of NCIS... but never mind that, because Very Super Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs blows into Leon’s office and tells him, “We’re taking the case, Leon.” so, I guess as long as Gibbs decides it, then it’s a done deal... and, of course, the local LEOs are more than willing to turn the case over to NCIS... okaaaaay...
I am beyond confused as to why Palmer and McGee - two very MARRIED men - would think Abby should choose them to be her “plus one”... like Hari Seldon wrote in an earlier post, apparently the writer didn’t know - or forgot - that these guys are married! (good job, Monreal! )
if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: why do they always run?? call me evil, but the best part of the entire episode was when the guy got hit by the truck; I’d love to see that more often...
I don’t even want to discuss the mother/daughter relationship, or the daughter living out of her car, or that she was a homeless vet, or that the mom was killed because she was trying to bust those guys for selling drugs or, or, or... the whole storyline just worked my nerves...
I don't know about y'all, but I was lead to believe that this episode was to be the first of a two-parter devoted to the departure of PP/Abby... excuse me, but it sure as hell wasn’t! the final scene with her and Reeves was just a lead in to next week’s episode... there was nothing in this episode that even hinted that she was leaving NCIS... her winning dinner for 2 to “the igloo” certainly didn’t constitute a storyline for a “2-parter”!
you know, I hate when people try to blow sunshine up my skirt...
that’s it, I have nothing more to say...
nas
edit: on second thought, I do have one more thing to say... if Duane Henry is leaving the show, too, I wish him well; he deserves better!

After rewatching the episode, a few thoughts:
This was certainly a Reeves-centric episode. We saw more of Reeves and his back story with this than we have in quite a while. Although nothing has been said, I think this is the character's farewell. The writers have not treated him well over the past two seasons. Why expect them to do things right at this point?
There was only one gunshot and the promo pics are showing banded badges. I can see Reeves jumping in front of Abby, is Abby bright enough to hit the ground or scream? We shall see....
In regards to the promo clips, I have a feeling they are deceptive. The way they are presented, they encourage viewers to "assume" that Abby was the one shot in this episode. I have the feeling that she is shot in the next episode. Will the PTBs kill her off in the end? I hope they are more original than that, but I do have my doubts.

I had an 'uh oh' moment regarding Reeves well before the last scene of the episode. He was doing his thing with the charity and working with Sara Carter and Jack said that 'Reeves had really come into his own.' It seemed like a sweet line, complimenting a character but with television it always seems like those kind of things precede a fall of a character. The line wasn't out of context but it was conspicuous.
With regards to the one gunshot, just because we only heard one shot doesn't mean that the guy doesn't shoot a second time. I'm sure that the first shot hits Reeves and we saw the result of his second with Abby being rushed into the hospital in the preview. Again, I'm convinced that this whole thing was connected to the mysterious 'free' dinner at the fancy restaurant that Abby 'won' (and subsequently next week's episode where someone is the target of a hit man.) I'm almost certain that our robber was in fact a hitman that would have shot both of them regardless of whether Abby wanted to help him or if they had given up their wallets. Sending her the free meal would be a great way to guarantee her to be in a certain place at a certain time so that the hitman could kill her.

Maybe Reeves took the [fatal] bullet and Abby's head hit the pavement when she fell.

I’m gonna leave the speculation up to all of you...
who knows: ~ who lives? ~ who dies? ~ was the shooter really a hit man? ~ who the black bands over the badges are for?
all I can be sure of is that promo clips are always misleading...
even seeing Gibbs standing over Abby’s bed in the hospital could be misleading... (if he really is in the same room with her, I think it’s kinda’ sad that the only way they could be seen together this season is if one of them is unconscious, so they don’t have to talk to each other... 😕)
come next Tuesday we’ll know, but until then...

Well, they DID take baby steps getting them together, they went from phone intercom two episodes ago, to voice intercom this week, to one party comatose in her, dare I say, "Swan Song" (or am I gonna trigger your bang-bang-shoot-em-up hatred with that phrase?)
