I knew I was excited to watch the season premier but I was not prepared for what happened as soon as it started - I couldn't stop crying.
To tell the truth, when I heard they'd gone with a woman to play The Doctor I was apprehensive. I wasn't sure I liked that idea at all. I was still apprehensive yesterday afternoon but Jodie Whittaker had me as soon as SHE crash landed into... well I won't say just in case anyone is planning on watching but hasn't had the chance yet. I loved they addressed the gender change that came with this regeneration right away.
To me she was The Doctor right from the start - something Peter Capaldi didn't do. In fact, I never became a fan of #12. He never looked like he was enjoying himself. After his 1st season (and the departure in a way I loathed of companion Clara Oswald) I became a "watch at it" viewer when I remembered it was on.
The one complaint I had was BBC-America's presentation of it. It was a global premier but we weren't in time with the UK - we had way too many commercial breaks (every 6 minutes for 3-5 minutes) and breaks for interviews with fans. It broke up the momentum. They should have gone with "limited commercial interruption".

I stopped watching a few years ago. I just didn't think it was as good as the earlier show. Did they also happen to address the fact that the Doctor was only supposed to be allowed 12 incarnations?

This is from quora-dot-com: "A lot of people have answered this already, but a short answer is: River Song gave her regenerations to the Doctor, allowing him to have more regenerations. ... In Matt Smith's last episode, the Time Lords gave the Doctor an extra set of regenerations, so he was able to later regenerate into Peter Capaldi's Doctor."
I hope that's helpful. I thought the show was pretty great and I'll keep watching for now.

Thanks for the info. I missed River Song/Melody Pond Williams giving hers to The Doctor. You're very welcome. I saw that episode but missed the one where the Time Lords gave The Doctor more regenerations. I get so confused. I missed nearly all of last season because even though I liked Peter Capaldi, I found the whole season to be pretty dark and depressing. Guess I wasn't in the mood for all that grim to the brim stuff. I hope this season is a LOT more light-hearted.

I stopped watching with Capaldi. It wasn't really a sudden decision - I was recording the episodes then just took longer and longer to get around to watching them and then stopped getting around to doing the recording. I don't know if I'll pick it up again, though it's encouraging to know that others on this board are giving positive reviews. I really wish they'd done a double fake and given the role to David Morrissey (and I'm not going to explain that).

I have a confession to make:
for the last 3 days I have been watching nothing but Doctor Who on t.v.... BBCAmerica has been airing the series 24/7, and I’m lovin’ it!
yep, no national news, no local news, no idiotic so & so’s tweeting moronic posts, no Dems vs. the GOP, no GOP vs. the Dems, no police shootings, no reports of Mother Nature gone crazy with the weather... NOTHING! (except a little football 🏈 - very little...)
yep, just me, the Doctor and the TARDIS (or as Clara calls it, the “snogging box” 😂)... I have to say, it’s been quite therapeutic just traveling thru time and space - doing lots of running...
oh, I know I have to return to Reality eventually, but for now my mood has improved considerably (as has Maxine’s 😉)...

Confession: I've got such a girl crush on Clara and now love Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria in Victoria.
I've been watching too in between pet visits.

yes, she is such a pretty gal… but my absolute favorite female “traveling companion++” is River Song played by Alex Kingston - she is one gorgeous woman, who never seems to age! btw, do you remember her as Miranda Pennebaker in NCIS from several seasons back?

nasWas Melody Pond/River Song a companion? I seem to remember her popping in and out. I loved her but even for science fiction I thought her parentage was convoluted. Yep, I remember her from NCIS and before that ER. Clara (loved the pronunciation of her name) was my favorite followed by Donna.

right you are, NewBe! River wasn’t ever the Doctor’s travel companion, per se... she was such an important part of his life I called her his travel companion “++”...
I agree, her parentage was very convoluted but because quite often the characters traveled from one time to another, I just let it slide... for a Realist like me that was hard to swallow at times, but then the whole series is pure sci-fi/fantasy, so I can’t argue the point...
like I said, my escape from Reality for the past few days has been therapeutic... 😕 unfortunately I must return to Real Life pretty soon to see what 2019 has in store for the world...

I'm going to miss the special episode with the current Doctor tomorrow night. New Years Day dinner at my sister's place. I'll have to catch it on Xfinity On-Demand on Wednesday.
