nailed it, NewBe!
I thought the kid who played Max Girard did a great job... at the ripe old age of 19 he has a lot of credits to his name...
nasOnly this time he relished being a jerk until Gibbs called him on it. If you have to be schooled to do an assigned job, no matter what the job, well you’re not a good person. His smugness grated on me.

She is usually very understanding to all the others but Nick? She really pissed me off.

I've noticed I'm saying this more and more often "not a bad episode, not a good episode." The "crime" story didn't stand out and eventually took a back seat to the "on the base" story. Never been a great fan of Torres, but he's not a bad character either (there's that "not good, not bad" motif again) and his actions were as expected. It was nice to seem the show reflect on the catastrophe of 6 years back and I thought the kid did a good job (and Jack was a jerk to Torres). Also found the energy drink bit with McGee and Casie fun. All in all, coulda been better, coulda been worse.

I liked Jack trying to get Nick to STFU when he started laying in to Max and I’m glad Gibbs let him have it too when he said he’d have been nicer, ie: professional, if he’d known Max was a VIP. To me, and Gibbs, it made him worse. So the non-connected kids didn’t deserve his best job. Shame on him.

Late to the party but...
I liked the case did not suspect the sister.
As far as mentorship went - the entire thing was a joke. Torres was a jerk, did not like how Vance acted towards him in front of the kids, did not like how Jack acted although I liked her being understanding towards Max better than Torres being a jerk towards them.
I have worked in situations where we had kids come in to mentor, and my husbands company does a lot of work with mentorship. The fact that these kids won an essay contest with this as a prize and then they walked in and were pushed off on someone without any agenda, itinerary or program goals was ridiculous. He should have been given their essays to read at a minimum. Mentoring is not for everyone - I did it when I had to but we had other staff who really enjoyed it so they usually volunteered.
I did like the tie in to the bombing though and I thought that the actor who played Max did a great job!
I am watching all the episodes this week to catch up to the current one...
