😱 oh nooooo! they’re gonna SINK the SUB!! 😱
c’mon now - - did any of y’all really think LJG and Bishop wouldn’t make it out alive? the Realist in me just doesn’t allow me to hold my breath for situations like that...
even tho this wasn’t a real situation, I must admit, however, I felt Bishop’s anxiety... I have a dreaded fear of water, and the last place I’d want to be is on a submarine; just the thought of being in a confined space like that - under water - gives me the heebie-jeebies!

Quite reminiscent of the movie Crimson Tide, at least that portion of the episode. I guess I'm channeling a little bit of Tony, but I got the false suspicion of the guy in the galley when he said the, "I'm just the cook." line. Nothing comparable to a full size nuclear sub, but I've taken an underwater tour on a small sub before which I think went to about 150 feet and didn't get nervous.
I'll admit I liked the fake-out with Ducky departing, though I was a bit suspicious when he kept talking like he'd never see any of the people again - I just don't believe he would sever all contact as a civilian. DMcC was used well in this episode and it almost makes up for the last time around... Almost.
Didn't like the dropping of more subtle hints of something between Torres and Bishop, though I still think it looks like Torres is the only one interested and Bishop is either oblivious or pretending not to notice.

That sounds like you found the appropriate place to settle down.

The case for me was a stretch and I have a generous ability to suspend disbelief. I think I need to watch this one again before I make my final grade.
However, there were a few things that I really liked about the episode:
- Bishop's general unease with the coincidental nature of the case and the mysterious orders to dive. I liked her outward fretting versus Gibbs' internal mulling of the case. Both came to the same conclusions but with a very different process.
- Gibbs comment about Rule 39 probably should be higher on the list made me laugh out loud
- I loved how confident Tim was when he was put in charge of the investigation. He ran the case well and they ultimately averted a major crisis.
- But the number one redeeming quality to the episode was: Doctor Donald Mallard, NCIS Historian. What a perfect way to change Ducky's role at NCIS without stepping on Jack's toes as a profiler and on Jimmy's toes as the Chief Medical Examiner and keep Ducky in a role where he gets to tell us wonderful stories and impart his wisdom.

Well, I couldn't help but compare it to the Sub Rosa episode of year 1. That one was better.

Hari mentioned Crimson Tide. I was thinking The Hunt For Red October in reverse. I really liked the episode even though the plot was a little out there. Otherwise I have no nitpicks. Very well done IMO.

Got to watch the episode finally. I actually like this a lot. No real suspension of disbelief, or stretching my patience. Everyone did well with their parts, everyone seemed to have a reasonable duty and screen time.
the only continuity nic-pic I would have would be that a couple of years ago Torres was saving up for a motorcycle and gave too much for Jimmy's charity which meant he couldn't buy the cycle, now he has a nest egg seemingly larger than the GDP of a third world nation. But overall, not that big a deal with me.
Glad to see McGee back to writing.

That's a really great post Llyan. Thanks for sharing it.
Overall I enjoyed the episode. I think the writers were quite clever in finding a way to keep Ducky around part time without him being a pest. The writers did a good job of keeping us guessing about the perpetrator by giving us the red herring of the COB. Yes, the story was a bit far-fetched, but I thought is was well-acted. I did not understand why they just didn't search the galley electrical system for the relay device though. I also liked that Torres actually did his job and was not a whiny little boy. I think Rocky did an awesome job directing. One quibble I will add to the discussion - why did folks carry sidearms on the sub?
One thing I had fun with was all of the pop culture references. It took me two viewings to catch all the ones I did - but I'm sure there were more. In addition to "Reginald Barclay", there was Gloria Gaynor and I will survive from Ducky, "Skip to the end" from McGee (from Princess Bride), The Odd Couple, The Barbershop Quartet singing "Everytime We Say Goodbye", and Lifeline.

Catch up episode #3 ...
I enjoyed it. Maybe it was because the past episode was so bad but I enjoyed it.
I liked hearing Naval terminology agaivn (COB for one). A flashback to when NCIS was more a naval centered show ...
I picked up on that too - the song is on my running playlist.
I was really unhappy with the way Ducky was used in the last episode. I agree this was well done.
I have watched these episodes without distractions which has helped a bit. On to the next one!
