Whew. Got my submission in and with the overtime I put in, I was able to take today off and watch the episode again. I took some notes as I watched:
- I don't have jetlag but boy do I empathize with McGee's level of exhaustion. From his body language, he looked like he was jetlagged. Nicely done.
- When Jimmy said that the Petty Officer crawled out of the ground like a zombie and Vance said it was a first for him. I immediately thought about the episode Left for Dead from season 1, which actually had a woman crawl out of a shallow grave and involved explosives. Then I realized that was before McGee joined the team and everyone else (except for Ducky) who was involved in that case was gone, so no one else would have remembered it.
- I'm not sure how much time is supposed to have passed between arresting the CEO and McGee returning to NCIS. I get the feeling it was at least a few days given that they had time to ship the watch to Alaska for the father and Gibbs and McGee to take a fishing trip to somewhere that required a plane. The more I think about it, the more I think that McGee and Gibbs had time to have a heart-to-heart during which Tim realized he didn't want to be Gibbs (as he tells Nick later in the episode).
- I thought that the team reactions to Parker being offered the job were great. Knight is indifferent because she just joined the team too. She has no personal loyalty to Gibbs because she never worked with him. Torres is angry but mostly because he's angry that Gibbs left. McGee wasn't happy that Gibbs was gone but he wasn't against Parker taking the job either because he had already turned down the position.
- I think this is going to continue with how they interact with Parker moving forward. Knight and Parker are both new to the team, so they'll get along fine. Torres will but heads with Parker and McGee is just going to continue doing his job.
- I loved how McGee kinda gave Parker the Gibbs stare when Parker tried to avoid calling his contact at the FBI to look up more information on the redacted Petty Officer. I'm pretty sure that McGee knew that Parker was going to take the job and Parker 'doth protest too much' about how he wasn't going to take the job. McGee gave him the same 'are you kidding me' look when Parker tried to protest in MTAC.
- I liked Kasie's ultimatum to Parker.
- Tim and Torres' conversation in the car was a great explanation as to why Tim (and possibly Sean) didn't want to be the lead agent. Of all the reasons to avoid giving McGee Gibbs' position, McGee choosing his family over the job is probably the only reason that makes sense and it's completely in character. While I would have loved to see McGee as the team lead (I think he would have done great) with a Probie of his own (would have made a *great* full-circle storyline). I appreciate that Torres accepted his reasoning with grace.
- Jimmy's reaction to Gibbs leaving felt a little like a toddler's temper tantrum. But it did let us have that fabulous speech by David so it was worth it.
- I'm not sure about the feasibility of implanting a bomb as part of a pacemaker but it's the McGuffin that made the episode move forward, so it didn't bother me.
- In spite of how doofy he was, I liked Roymon. The actor did a great job with the part.
- I'm pretty sure that it was Knight who told Parker that it would 'spook the locals' if the team thought he had plans to take the job. She just put up with Torres' antics about Bishop and knew that at least Torres would put up a fight (he did). She also had reason to believe that McGee would put up a fight for being passed over (he had already declined the position anyway).
- When I saw the title, I immediately thought of the song Changes by Bowie. When Parker said he was a Bowie guy, I knew that they were referencing the song and the change from Gibbs to Parker. Made me smile when they used the song as an outro.
Overall, I really enjoyed the episode. It wasn't going to be easy for them to address Gibbs/Harmon's departure and I thought that they did a great job. They really addressed it head on and I'm glad that they did.
I'm not sure what kind of boss Parker will be. We still don't know much about him. He is friends with Fornell, so that could lead to seeing him down the road again which is never a bad thing. I suspect that there will be growing pains (the next episode is called 'False Start') but conflict is what drives drama, so I'm on board for seeing what comes next.
