I generally thought it was a decent episode as well. Even though I typically hate "our hero is held hostage" type episodes. This one at least was fairly well done.
Typically these hostage scenarios are pretty much paint by numbers. You know our main character isn't going to have anything particularly bad happen to them. And typically our hero is able to reason with the hostage taker and/or defuse the situation regardless of whether or not they had any sort of hostage training. This one also very much reminded me of the NCIS episode where a kid held his classmates hostage in school. Even to the point where they were contemplating shooting the kid to end that situation.
But anyway, I thought both kids did a good job of acting in this episode. I actually liked the interactions between the kid with the bomb and our coroner guy. Admittedly though I wasn't paying full attention at first because I thought I would hate this one. But it showed the sick girl texting -- was she in on this thing as well? Anyway I did feel sad for the kid with the bomb strapped to her -- her sister was down to her last hope and her mom seemed like a complete tool. The creepy guy who convinced her to do that was indeed creepy and evil and stuff, though pretty much a one note character.
A couple of things did annoy me though. We had that typical trope of disarming the bomb down to the last second or so. Gee, how many times have seen that sort of thing happen? And while last week Blue was halfway normal and competent, this week she was off the charts annoying once again. I mean, I get it she's not a seasoned agent or anything and more of a techie. But I didn't expect her to spazz out like that. And I think there has to be something going on between her and coroner guy. Remember a couple of episodes back? When it looked like Blue wasn't going to stick around? Coroner dude was basically Grumpy McGrumpy pants during the entire episode. In this one, she freaks out when he's in that hostage situation. And now at the end of this one, she insists on sticking around while he tends to his wife with dementia.
We did learn a couple more things about the characters. The aforementioned wife with dementia. And that JD is apparently going through a divorce and has a kid.
Anyway, took it down a bit because of listed annoyances. But generally went better than I thought it would. Gave this a B-.

As brgjoe said, pretty much paint by the numbers, and the episode was named 'Bait'.
I pegged the bad guy the second he showed up on screen and thought Mackie did too until she walked right past him to stare at an open field. Apparently the whole family was involved, but a small thing that bugged me - the mom sewed the vest and said she was supposed to be the one wearing it, but there's absolutely no way she would have been able to breathe. That vest was the proper size for the daughter wearing it. There's also the matter of the cop that was shot at the bank - I'm pretty sure the full autopsy wouldn't be needed to figure out he was shot in the back while he was facing the girl. Oh, and the disarming with 1 second left: the idea is to disconnect the timer from the explosive, so that timer should continue to 0 with the signal to detonate just not getting through. Maybe I'm just being nit picky.

I was going to mention the vest size thing. But I just kinda gave them the benefit of the doubt and maybe at some point either the mother or daughter altered it to fit at some point. And since I'm not an expert in how to make an exploding bomb vest (missed that course when I was in school), I gave that one a pass.
What I wanted to add in that I forgot was why didn't they allow the team to block the signal to that bomb device? Did they give a reason? I mean, other than "No, you can't do it. So there!" I know they mentioned a hospital in the area. As JD said (paraphrasing) "So they don't get to read their email for awhile." Makes sense to me. You'd think the hospital would have backup contingencies if cell service would go down anyway. I mean, I still have a landline. (Ok, quit that laughing..) So of course our heroes did it anyway and saved the day. Not without getting "disciplined" of course.
Guess they felt they need some sort of plot device to make it more dramatic.

@ brgjoe and Hari
you guys are beginning to sound like me when I was critiquing NCIS…
this Sydney version does nothing for me; it’s just another poorly written crime drama and not worth my time to dissect it…
questions: what if, one of these times, they couldn’t disarm the 💣 and it went off? that would be an interesting twist, wouldn’t it? “Oops, now that’s messy.” 😝 and why are all these idiots just standing around watching the guy with the wire cutters? shouldn’t the entire area be evacuated?
all things considered, win or lose, I’d still prefer to watch the SUNS play 🏀…

NCIS:Sidney is OK so far. Not great, but I don't think it's bad either. It sometimes takes awhile to warm up to the show and the main characters. They are slowly being fleshed out as the series goes along. It's rare for me to really like a show from the very beginning (the exceptions are NCIS and NCIS:New Orleans that I pretty much enjoyed right out of the gate).
So I am sticking with it for now. Besides, outside of sports, there isn't a lot of original programming on right now. At least NCIS:Sydney is giving us new episodes. And at least there's that. Unless it really gets bad, I'm gonna still watch it. Especially since a lot of my favorite sports teams sucketh right now (though my Chicago Bulls are at least playing a little better of late).

I wouldn’t get too attached to this series quite yet, brgjoe according to an article published a few days ago:
As yet, no announcement has come regarding the future of NCIS: Sydney, and a second season has not been confirmed by CBS. However, the spotlight the show is receiving by being the only CBS fall debut has a chance to catapult the show's popularity and help ensure a second outing.

there are only 3 episodes remaining in this first season, so only time will tell…

yep, it worked this time, pd…
well, Hitch may have given an understandable explanation, but after the hundredth time it becomes predictable - know what I’m sayin’?
just a bit of trivia: actually, there were two agents who died on NCIS as a result of Ka-booms, but neither one had the 💣 attached to their body to be saved at the last second… they were:
Paula Cassidy
NCIS Special Agent at the Pentagon and Guantanamo Bay. Killed in a suicide bombing in Season 4, Paula was a true-blue NCIS agent 'til the bitter end. She sacrificed herself to protect her fellow co-workers.
and…
Ned Dorneget
In Season 12, NCIS said a tragic goodbye to Ned "Dorney" Dorneget, who sacrificed his life when civilians faced a bomb threat. Dorney, a probationary agent who eventually worked his way up to the Cyber Operations Division, died while on a mission in Cairo, Egypt.

I know we're veering a bit off course here. But even though they went out as heroes, I hated both of their deaths. Loved both the characters and the actors playing them.
And just when Dorney got good, he got blow'd up. Sigh.
