I have long been an admirer of Dietzen's talent and have argued that he is grossly underused in this series and overall.
But I must admit, I have mixed feelings concerning this episode. I'm not sure if, again, the writer's either couldn't or wouldn't write his part well, or if, for one rare and unexplainable reason, he made some poor acting choices. My gut says it's the writing.
Again, the opening scene with Torres, Bishop, Ducky and Reeves' body shows Jimmy standing by the table just staring at the body bag. The last time he did this was when Diane was killed, and while she wasn't part of the team, he, for whatever reason, considered her part of the family. Perhaps because she was one of Gibb's ex's.
His tender exchange with Reeve's at the end of the scene was very well done, and not over acted.
On the other hand, Jimmy's appearance in Abby's hospital room with Tim was awful. I don't know what was being attempted here, but both Palmer's and McGee's performances are forgettable. To me, it just seemed as if they needed a scene to fill time, and this moment with the three of them was just a chance for Sean to emote.
The final scene was the most honest I have seen Palmer in a long time. Jimmy honestly couldn't understand why Abby would leave, and didn't want her to. His hesitance to say he supported Abby in what she was doing shouted volumes about his doubt. The hug at the end was truly a moment to remember and gut wrenching.
If I were to grade this, it would have to be a painful B-. Remove the hospital scene and it goes to a solid A.
