Better episode than the last (is that a compliment?). Liked the interaction between Parker and Vance. Didn't have trouble figuring out which of the characters we met was the bad guy (the guys with the guns who show up at the last minute don't count). Not sure what I think of Vance's relationship with the German lady. No inherent problem with it, I just don't want it to become a regular issue on the show. Best unexpected scene was Parker falling down behind the car to fire at the bad guy's feet. Don't see that often (am beginning to like Parker even more than I did last season). Someone on the program is an old movie freak. Going all the way back to DiNozzo there have been references to old moves (and some not so old). Last night it was "The Third Man," a particular favorite of mine. It would be interesting to know who it is that's the fan and to see if they can work up a plot with an old movie being the key to solving a case. McGee in charge made sense and surely Vance prepared him (and the people he would be conferring with) beforehand. McGee should be a natural for those kinds of things, but I did wonder what happened to the Assistant Director (there used to be one).

You're talking about a combination of "Being Bad" and "Ephemera". "Being Bad" was the episode where they spoofed "The Breakfast Club". They even brought in John Kapelus, who played the janitor Carl in the movie, to play the school vice principal Richard Vernon, originally played by Paul Gleason in the movie, who passed away in 2006. "Ephemera" was the episode where the cast played characters in the life of the victim as they solved the case. Both good episodes.

Greg Germann who played the assistant director when Vance was stabbed is now a regular on "Grey's Anatomy".

Remember "Ephemera" as one of my favorites. Don't see that as an old movie, merely a projection back in time. And I wasn't asking about the particular actor who played Vance's assistant director several years ago, but wondered why there wasn't an assistant director at NCIS (without reference to who played the role).

McGee should be a natural for those kinds of things, but I did wonder what happened to the Assistant Director (there used to be one). They've used two different titles - Assistant Director and Deputy Director. In addition to Germann, there was an assistant director before him whose name I don't remember plus LA had Granger and Mosley. Vance was also either assistant or deputy before becoming Director. I remember having the impression there were several Assistant Directors, kind of like a corporation might have several VP's in charge of different areas like operations, finance, IT, etc. Just a guess, and the writers probably don't even know, but I'd say if the Director is going to be out for a couple of days then the senior agent fills in, but if it will be an extended amount of time, one of the assistants/deputies will be called upon to step in. I'd also say that might be why Parker was so insistent on going with Vance - so he wouldn't have to fill in.
