Considering he's still involved with the show, it would be terrible for MH not to appear for Ducky. Second on my list is that Delilah should be with Tim at the funeral. Next on my list, even though he was only in one episode, would be Dr. Magnus (Bob Newhart) if he's healthy enough to do it (he's 94 now). I certainly wouldn't mind Fornell and Bishop, but they can just cast a random actor to be SecNav of the week. If he was still around, I'd probably throw Steve Bridges on the list, just for what his character showing up would say for Ducky.

I get that MW can be a bit polarizing. I try to separate the actor from the character. And I did warm up to Tony in later seasons. He was competent and less frat-boyish towards the end of his run on the show. So I wouldn't mind seeing him back. Ziva/Bishop I am more neutralist on. They can be there or not and it wouldn't be out of place for me. And even though I'm sure it would never happen, it would be kinda nice to see Abby pay her tribute to Ducky.
And yeah, I think Gibbs should definitely show up for it. They have such a long history together. So he should absolutely be there and say a few words at the ceremony.

@ Hari and brgjoe…
man, you guys sure know how to plan a funeral! but remember, this is a 42 minute t.v. show - not a real life service… bringing all those people back for filming is highly unlikely…
imho, in this situation “less is more”…

TV Line has made a poll of who should come back.
Also there is a bunch of suggestions of who else should show up.
My thought would be to show a funeral in a church type setting and just do a drive by of who's there with no dialog.

I would be content if they did that, again I don’t want to see Z, or MW, but I could make my peace if they were just there silently and nothing else.

I hate to be a pragmatist during all this funeral planning, but lets be realistic. Even if SAG/AFTRA sign a deal by the end of October, we won't see any new episodes until late February to early March. Also, Season 20 ended in a cliffhanger, which they need to resolve during the first episode of the season. I guess they could kill off Ducky by having him rescue Torres. Then they could have a Kate type episode where they all process his loss.
They already dedicated this last Monday's 20th anniversary marathon to David.
Rather than have a poorly written funeral episode and actors jockying over who won't appear on screen with another actor, I would like a special dedicated to David McCallum after the season premiere. They could show the best of Ducky with each actor and do a Zoom interview with each actor talking about him.
TV shows as a general rule suck when it comes to funeral episodes; well except 6 Feet Under.

Good point about it still being a while before new episodes would happen, I didn’t think about that point. Also, the special idea seems so much more meaningful compared to a poorly written episode. There have been so many amazing Ducky moments with all the characters, it would be nice to honour him that way.

well, you don’t show up very often, dude, but when you do you sure write good words! 😉 so, welcome to my Realist Club!
actually, by the time NCIS airs a new episode - in February/March? - it’ll be almost as year since Season 20’s final episode which aired on 22 May ‘23… I forgot the season ended with a “Torres cliffhanger”, so yeah they have to deal with that, don’t they?
didn’t know they already did a dedication to DMac… haven’t watched the show all summer - I don’t do re-runs…
whatever/however/whenever/if-ever they do something, I still think it should be simple - and classy, like he was!

nasThis is essentially what was done on the show Barney Miller in 1979 when Jack Soo died, except the actors were all on the set in person and together. Here's a short sample:

They could also do the same thing they did when Ralph Waite passed away. That was a well-done episode, although Ziva was missing from the funeral. While many will disagree, I felt she should have been included since she had several scenes with Gibbs' father.

Yeah, something like the Jackson Gibbs funeral for Ducky. And I just remembered, Ducky made Gibbs the executioner of his will, so Gibbs definitely needs to be there.
As for the others I could do without them, especially Tiva and Senior. But Fornell showing up would be nice. Maybe Sloane. But additional guest may distract from the overall grief some should experience like Palmer. Ducky was his mentor, so it must be hard on him.
The show should focus on Palmers and Gibbs grief, there are enough good scenes from over the years for showing Ducky's role in their lifes. You can even add in a throwback to young Gibbs and young Ducky.
BTW, the Jackson funeral was also months later in regards to Ralph Waites death. If they want a classy episode, they shouldn't rush it. Ducky did show up rarely, so let him live for a few more months and then give him a proper farewell.

Yeah, I really like those ideas. I thought the way they handled Gibbs' father passing was pretty well done. Something like that.
Or perhaps an episode with flashbacks (even though I usually don't really care for those) with good/happy moments with Ducky from previous episodes. And then maybe solving the "crime of the week" with some obscure bit of knowledge that Ducky once told them in a story.
Either way, it would be nice if Gibbs would come back and say a few words about his long time friend. Really hope that happens.
And yep it will be awhile before any of that happens. Remember too there is still an actor's strike going on (at least last time I read anything about it). So who knows when any of this will happen. At least maybe the writers can get a head start on some of this.
Gosh it will seem so strange not to have Ducky around -- even though I know his role had been reduced. Just sad to know he's never coming back.

This is what I referred to early in the thread and I thought it was a great way to handle it. I would love to see this although I am not sure all the past key members would want to sit in the same space at the same time...
