Matt’s Inside Line: Scoop on NCIS, Fire Country, The Rookie, The Way Home, The Ones Who Live and More!BY MATT WEBB MITOVICH FEBRUARY 7, 2024 3:46 PM
What’s coming up for McGee on NCIS? –Natalie What’s coming up is a shaking of his family tree. “All of our characters on NCIS know that family is more important than anything,” co-showrunners Steven D. Binder and David North tell TVLine. “But after McGee takes a genealogy DNA test, he’s shocked to find out he has more family than he realized.”
I’ll take any NCIS scoop you can give me, but I’m especially interested in what plans they have for Jimmy and Jess! –MC Akin to McGee dealing with the above, “Knight has her own special family drama to deal with when her father shows up during a case and has some ideas what his daughter should be doing with her life,” Binder and North shared with me. “And, of course, there’s poor Jimmy Palmer, stuck exactly where nobody would ever want to be: aka in the middle of a Knight family feud.” Bonus scoop! I can in turn exclusively report that Russell Wong (Westworld, The Oath) will play Jess’ dad in that storyline.

The NCIS Franchise’s 1,000th (!) Episode: What’s It About, and When Will It Air?BY MATT WEBB MITOVICH
FEBRUARY 21, 2024 2:35 PM
Stars and creatives from the original NCIS series as well as all four offshoots — NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: Sydney — were on hand for a celebration of the well-watched franchise’s 1,000th overall episode, which began filming on Monday.
The full NCIS cast plus co-showrunners Steven D. Binder and David North were joined on the “big orange room” set by visiting NCIS: LA alum Chris O’Donnell and (appearing via Zoom) onetime NCIS: New Orleans front man Scott Bakula (currently in New York for the Broadway musical The Connector), the NCIS: Hawai’i cast (congregated in their own HQ) and NCIS: Sydney leads Olivia Swann and Todd Lasance.
Other network and studio brass on hand for the major, four-digit milestone — which will air as the seventh episode of NCIS Season 21, on Monday, April 15 — included NCIS EP Charles Johnson, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach, CBS Studios president David Stapf and NCIS: Hawai’i co-showrunner Christopher Silber, each of whom spoke at length about the “special sauce” that has fueled the franchise’s ongoing success. (NCIS: Hawai’i co-showrunner Jan Nash appeared remotely.)
Binder in his speech referred to the procedurals’ reputation in some circles as being “simple” shows, but then spoke of how they are all programs a family can enjoy together. To crystalize his point: “‘I love The Handmaid’s Tale! I watch it with my grandmother,’ said no one ever.”
North stepped forth to recall how he when was a production assistant on NCIS‘ sire, he asked JAG co-EP Charles Johnson, “‘Could I be a PA on [the spinoff]?’ And Charles said to me, ‘You know what, David? I’ll move you over there, but you have to understand that in Hollywood shows like this usually don’t last.’ But I think deep down, Charles knew this one would.”
So, how does one possible do justice to such a big number, with one episode of the mothership? TVLine spoke withBinder and North about the grand Episode 1,000 plan.
“One of our own beloved characters is going to end up in grave danger, and you’re go to see all of the different franchises brought into this in a little bit of a different way,” said North. Added Binder, “There’ll be a personal storyline, and this one will circle around Director [Leon] Vance,” played by series vet Rocky Carroll.
Along the way, fans can be asssured, “We’re go to play plenty of homage to the past,” said North.
“Were hoping to put some Easter eggs for longtime fans of the show…,” Binder teased. And some might be very teeny-tiny eggs. “If you’e watching it in 4K, you might have to blow somethings things up,” the EP quipped, “but they’re going to be there.”

NCIS Video: Katrina Law, Brian Dietzen Warn of a Confession and ‘Bumps’ Ahead for Jessica/Jimmy BY MATT WEBB MITOVICHFEBRUARY 21, 2024 4:39 PM
Fans of NCIS‘ #KnightInShiningPalmer ‘ship are best advised to enjoy these next few episodes of Season 21, because ominous-sounding “detours and bumps” lie on the horizon.
TVLine was on-set Monday for the start of filming the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th overall episode, and we of course seized the opportunity to check in with both Katrina Law and Brian Dietzen on what’s ahead for the well-watched procedural’s latest (and unarguably sweetest) workplace romance.
As TVLine previously detailed, viewers and Jimmy alike will meet Jessica’s father, to be played by Russell Wong (aka Law’s dad from The Oath!), in the Monday, March 25 episode.
Previewing the “very exciting” development, Law told TVLine, “My father is a big deal in the NCIS world,” and when he travels to D.C. on a mission, it leads to a dad/daughter team-up — “and he kind of kicks ass a little!” raves Law.
Things are, however, less kickass on the “Dad meeting Jimmy” front. “It does not go to plan, unfortunately,” reports Dietzen “Not exactly the best introduction that Jimmy could have had to his girlfriend’s father!”
Worse, Dad “picks up on a couple of things” between Jessica and Jimmy, says Law, “and gets Jess to confess a few things as well.” It all builds to what Law says is an episode that’s both “heartwarming” and “nerve-wracking for the audience.”
Are Jess and Jimmy in true love, forever and ever? Thats’s the big question Law teases.
Dietzen in turn warns of “a bit of a fracture here and there” for the couple that has endured both a blurted “I love you!” and some PDA in the squad room. “As I’ve said before, love is sometimes not a straight line,” Dietzen ventures. “Sometimes it takes a few detours and bumps along the way.”

What does NCIS have in store for Parker this year? –Mink Akin to how Parker once went undercover as a lawyer, soon he “may possibly have to perform a surgery,” co-showrunner David North told me at the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th episode party. Added co-showrunner Steven D. Binder, “Gary Cole is an incredibly funny actor, and he hasn’t had a lot of opportunities to expose his comedic chops [on NCIS], so were hoping to do that.” North then noted that longtime producer Mark Horowitz opined that “Gibbs is the father figure of the team, but Parker is the crazy uncle, so we want to let Gary spread his wings.”
Can we expect any special visits to NCIS this season? –JVH Visitors don’t get much more special than this: It turns out the E.T. I spotted on-set last week is for NCIS, specifically the April 1 episode.tvline.com/lists/criminal-minds-season-17-spoilers-time-jump-prentiss-struggling/criminal-minds-season-17-time-jump/

Do you have more news on upcoming episodes of NCIS? –BK During my recent set visit (for the franchise’s 1,000th episode), co-showrunner Steven D. Binder teased, “Every 200 episodes, we like to put somebody on a horse. So we’re going to be doing that.” Bonus scoop: For those wanting a bit more on the “alien” episode (airing April 1, natch) that I teased last week, Binder specifically told me, “We have an episode where the team finds something that appears out-of-this-world.”

NCIS Video: Sean Murray Talks Tim’s New Kin, Braves Our NCIS Pop Quiz! BY MATT WEBB MITOVICHMARCH 13, 2024 12:15 PM It was this past November — when CBS‘ NCIS like most of TV was still on a strikes-extended hiatus — that Sean Murray marked the 20th anniversary of his debut as Special Agent Timothy McGee.
McGee in that span of time has become a husband… a father (to twins, whom apparently no one on the cast can name!)… and a lead agent, in the wake of Tony DiNozzo’s May 2016 departure. And yet there is still at least one more major life event on tap for Tim, when the next NCIS episode reveals a heretofore-unknown relative!
In “The Plan” (airing Monday, March 25), McGee finds himself in a tailspin when DNA results reveal a close relative he was unaware of. Elsewhere, the team — with the help of Jess’ father, Special Agent in Charge Feng Zhao (played by The Oath‘s Russell Wong) — works to unravel the mystery of a recently used service weapon belonging to a missing agent.
Speaking with Murray at a recent, on-set celebration of the franchise’s 1,000th overall episode, TVLine invited the series’ longest-running “original” cast member (he debuted in Episode 7, as recurring) to tease the imminent shaking of McGee’s family tree; watch video Q&A above.
Murray then talked up the aforementioned milestone episode, which airs as the April 15 NCIS and will feature “fun” Easter eggs of all shapes and sizes for longtime fans to discover.
Closing out the video Q&A, we sprung on Murray our “NCIS Pop Quiz!,” testing his familiarity with Gibbs’ rules, the CBS shows that aired after NCIS back in 2003, and more.
What final Q surprisingly stumped McGee’s portrayer? (And what playfully choice words did he have for the co-stars who could not for the life of them name either of Tim and Delilah’s children?) Press play above and enjoy!

NCIS: Daniela Ruah, Vanessa Lachey to ‘Cross Over’ for Franchise’s 1,000th Episode (Exclusive)BY MATT WEBB MITOVICH
MARCH 14, 2024 12:30 PM
The Los Angeles and Pearl Harbor offices will be represented when CBS‘ well-watched NCIS franchise airs its 1,000th episode in a few weeks.
TVLine has learned exclusively that both Daniela Ruah, who played Special Agent Kensi Blye-Deeks throughout NCIS: Los Angeles‘ 14-season run, and Vanessa Lachey, who currently leads the NCIS: Hawai’i team as Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant, will appear during that milestone hour, which will air as the Monday, April 15 episode of NCIS.
Though neither Kensi nor Jane will appear “in person” alongside the D.C.-based NCIS team, I am hearing the characters’ appearances will nonetheless be quite fun.
Also appearing during the episode — as first reported by TVLine’s Inside Line column — will be Director Leon Vance’s son Jared, to be played this time around by Spence Moore II (All American, Superman & Lois).
Previewing the franchise’s 1,000th installment, NCIS co-showrunner David North told TVLine during our recent set visit, “One of our own beloved characters is going to end up in grave danger, and you’re go to see all of the different franchises brought into this in a little bit of a different way.”
Added co-showrunner Steven D. Binder, “There’ll be a personal storyline, and this one will circle around Director Vance,” played by NCIS vet Rocky Carroll.
Along the way, fans can be assured, “We’re going to play plenty of homage to the past,” said North, and scatter “some Easter eggs for longtime fans of the show,” Binder added.
“If you’re watching it in 4K, you might have to blow somethings things up,” the EP quipped, “but they’re going to be there.”
Ruah has not strayed far from the NCIS-verse since filming her final scenes as NCIS: LA‘s Kensi a little over a year ago. Most recently, she directed the March 4 episode of NCIS and the April 15 NCIS: Hawai’i (aka the franchise’s 1,001st episode, titled, ha, “The Next Thousand”).
“If I get asked [to play Kensi again], I will certainly figure it out at the time,” Ruah told TVLine toward the end of NCIS: LA‘s run. “If it makes sense, why not, right?” (Ruah’s NCIS: LA co-star LL Cool J of course is currently reprising his role as Sam Hanna on NCIS: Hawai’i.)
Lachey’s Tennant meanwhile has popped up on the NCIS mothership thrice before — as part of a pair of two-show crossovers (in March and then September 2022), and in the January 2023 three-show crossover event that also folded in NCIS: LA.

Who has been (re)cast for a very special NCIS? What’s the prognosis for Grey’s Anatomy‘s new no-nonsense doc? What is on tap for Chicago P.D.’s Trudy? Read on for answers to those questions and many more! (You can and should email brand-new Qs to InsideLine@tvline.com.)
Are there any teasers for the 1,000th and 1,001st episodes of the NCIS-verse aka the NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i episodes? –Teags
Regarding the actual 1,000th episode of the NCIS franchise, I can exclusively report that Director Leon Vance’s son will figure into the “personal” crisis at hand — and this time around Jared will be played by Spence Moore II, whom you may recognize from his roles in Superman & Lois, grown-ish, ABC’s The Wonder Years reboot and/or All American. Jared has previously been played by Khamani Griffin (in Season 6) and Akinsola Aribo (Seasons 9-11); Moore’s debut airs Monday, April 15.Spence Moore II (photo by Harry Eelman)
Will NCIS‘ “The Stories We Leave Behind” be shown again? –Jill
As a matter of fact, that beautiful David McCallum/Ducky tribute will get an encore this Monday at 9/8c, ahead of NCIS‘ return with fresh episodes the following week on March 25. (The episode of course can also be streamed on Paramount+.)
