House Rules - Season 12, Episode 10. Number 8 on my list of top 20.
Please excuse my bias. I love Christmas episodes. So few programs seem to do them anymore, so when a good one shows up, I'm delighted. Not that NCIS has always done them, they didn't start till season 6, and they have missed on a couple of them. (Faith, New Born King). Therefore, please do not be surprised that there are 4 Christmas episodes in my top 20, and two in the top 10. ( Another note, when season 14 ends and I re-do my rankings, "The Tie That Binds" will be in my top 10.)
My First note will be the one big problem I have with this episode. In season 10 episode 19 "Squall" we are introduced to McGee's father, the Admiral. We also learn of his impending death due to cancer. It was stated in the episode that he only had a few, less than six, months to live. Fast forward to now, more than six months later, at Christmas, his father is skipping surgery to be with family at Christmas. (On a highly personal note, I've went through this with my fiance over a decade ago. Yes, she fought for two years, but in the end, when the treatments no longer worked, we lost her, quickly.) In "Squall" it was stated that there were no treatments". So, not to be morbid, McGee's father should have been dead long before this episode. They should have dealt with his death at the end of season 10.
Given my above rant, had they killed off McGee's father at the end of season 10, we wouldn't have "House Rules" and I would have to find a new #20 for my list. Also, we wouldn't have this great Christmas episode, which I also watch over and over at Christmas.
On to the episode.
Bringing back IT Kevin, Ajay Khan, and Heidi Partridge was great. Loved the attention on McGee and his ability to go from frustrated, reluctant Agent in Charge, to compassionate, persuasive counselor, to understanding, heart broken son, showed some range for Murray, and he pulled it off quite well.
There were, I thought, a lot of nuances to this show that could easily be missed if you get too caught up in the story. The subtle dig at Ziva's dad, and Tony's. The respect shown to Jackson, who they did lose at the end of season 11, which would explain why they didn't deal with Tim's dad's death sooner, but that could have been dealt with. . .
And after 11 1/2 seasons, we begin to rectify the incongruentcies and duplication's in the rules.
The scene in Autopsy where Gibbs shows the bad guys the body of the hacker. They begin to formulate a plane to catch Krampus, then catch themselves, great interaction between them and Gibbs.
Loved the scene in the squad room with the hackers handcuffed trying to coach Tony and Bishop in making fake online persona's, which Tony had done before, and a computer annalist would know how to do, still, pretty good.
Needless to say, I love this episode, might have to watch it again tonight.
Okay, any amount of forgiveness I might have been willing to give just flew out the window. I've reviewed what I wrote and the time line. In my thinking during writing, I assumed that House Rules was in season 11, not 12. There is a whole season between the ending of season 10, episode 19 to season 12, episode 24. They could have handled the death of McGee's father at the end of season 10, or anytime during season 11. I still love the episode.
