I'm not sure I have the words to express just how wonderful this episode was. Beautiful writing and performances.
Most of what I have to say was probably covered by Ncancemi (will read it after I post) but I'll go ahead anyway.
* Ralph Waite was perfectly cast as Gibbs' father. They even have the same blue eyes.
* Opening scene - Whoa that was brutal. I actually looked away when I watched it last night. Forced myself to look when I re-watched this morning.
* I could have sworn that the last name of was both McComb and LaComb - mostly the latter but I'm fairly certain that Ducky used McComb.
* Tony looked exceptionally good in his 3-piece suit.
* Of course Tony snooped into Gibbs file at some point in the last 8 years. Gibbs isn't from the mid-west as we all suspected, but from Stillwater, Pennsylvania.
And now for your reading enjoyment:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillwater,_Pennsylvania
Please note: Notable Residents
* Theories on where Gibbs came from:
Molded from clay (Ziva)
Fell to Earth in a capsule (ala Superman) Tim
Just came into being as "Gibbs" (Tony)
* Tony not invited on this investigation. I know why but I still missed him being there.
* Joined the Marines in 1976 - looked to be about 18.
Since he joined NIS in 1992, he did not do 20 years on the Corps on active duty.
* Small town sheriff (Ed) was once a nemesis of "Leroy." Even after all these years it's evident that the two have long memories and STILL don't like each other.
* Ethan's Aunt reminded me of the mousy-seeming fiancé in Dead And Unburied.
* I liked the nice older man that chatted up Ziva even before we are formally introduced to him as Jackson "Jack" Gibbs. I enjoyed seeing (again) the softer side of Ziva.
* Put foot in mouth much Tim??? "I thought I heard him referring to you as dead, once." Ziva was rather stunned that McGee said it and Jack looked hurt and clearly didn't believe his retraction. (The Bone Yard)
* Gibbs was named after an old friend of his father's. I wonder what happened to him.
* Sweet little moment when Gibbs and Shannon see each other for the 1st time when she's dressing a shop window and he's storming out of his father's store. (kind of nice to know that he was a typical teen.)
* Big smile moment when Jack and Gibbs drive away to go see Chuck Winslow and Tim and Ziva stand there sweetly until the car pulls away:
Ziva: "I'll call Tony"
Tim: "I'll call Abby"
Via video phone (Abby’s Lab)
Both of them to Tony and Abby: "GIBBS HAS A FATHER!"
* Smiling again with the reference to The Dukes of Hazzard
Tony refers to Hazzard County and then:
Abby: "Hey Luke, how's Uncle Jessie?" She even used a bit of a Daisy Duke voice - not so much the accent, but the breathy sweetness of her voice.
* Disliked Chuck Winslow from the moment we met him and that turned to downright loathing when he said: "That's women's work, Jack" when Jack offered to help Emily. She was dressed a bit out of the 1950s too – shudders.
* Odd line from Winslow: "Shows to Go" instead of "Goes to Show."
****** Lost about a minute when cable went out so I missed a few moments of this initial "interrogation." I don't think I missed too much.
* Fathers and Sons. Jack saw nothing wrong with questioning Tim on calling Gibbs "Boss." Was glad when Leroy gave him the "Gibbs Stare."
* Zip Code when Tim pinpointed that someone in the Winslow household looked at Ethan's video was 17878. This IS the Zip for Stillwater, PA.
* When Jack was trying everything he could from dissuading Gibbs from his investigation I wondered if he knew more than he was letting on or was simply looking for the good in people.
* When Tim and Ziva enter Jack's store (when the Gibbs men are reading the morning paper) Tim did not call Gibbs: "Boss."
* Interesting that Gibbs didn't seem too perturbed that Tim and Ziva overheard the sniping between he and his dad.
* Gibbs turning back into that teenage boy - stamping prices on cans and sweeping the floor. I don't think he did these things consciously.
* Jack has probably been waiting for years to ask that question:
"What did I do?"
He brought a date to Shannon and Kelly's funeral.
Thinking out loud: Did Jack and his wife divorce or did they stay married but have a bad marriage?
How long had Gibbs' mom been dead when Shannon and Kelly died?
I guess Gibbs is just like a lot of other people - didn't like it that dad moved on with life after mom died. Perhaps Jack needed some moral support while he was there supporting his son.
* Was Gibbs your proverbial "90-pound weakling" when he was a teen? I wonder why Ed and Chuck ganged up on him (cowards!) when they beat the stuffing out of him.
* Ziva talking with Emily. Lots of subtext in THAT conversation when she said:
"Those feelings do not go away overnight."
Was she talking about her feelings for Tony or that mysterious someone (Michael) in Israel.
* OK Tim, I know you're gaining self-confidence but actually coming out and questioning Gibbs on his investigative methods in this case was really stretching it. Gibbs called him on it but not in a way we could have expected from him.
* Evidence destroyed - car set on fire.
* I listened 4 times and I couldn't catch the line.
What did Tony say about Abby when they got out of the car in Stillwater? It was when Tim asked if they'd passed a lot of VW Beetles on the way up.
EDIT: Punch Buggy.
* Yippee!! Abby got to go on an investigation!!!!
* Great car. 1971 Dodge Challenger
Also for your enjoyment:

EDIT:
* Gibbs driving his car! Great smile. It's so rare that when it happens it's a sight to see.
* Loved that Jack prevented Sheriff Ed from going into the Winslow home. He might have some unresolved issues with his son but no one is gonna mess with "my boy."
* Abby's testing blood samples. OK, I should have thought of this earlier (when I too thought that Christopher belonged to Emily and Ethan instead of Emily and Nick Kingston), but I didn't.
It wasn't until Gibbs walked back into the Winslow home that it hit me: Ethan belongs to Chuck Winslow and Ethan's mother. (remember, she was a bit of a wild child according to LaComb's aunt).
Nick hired 2 men from the mine to kill Ethan because he thought his son was Ethan's.
MEN! ARRGH!
* Tony finally got to ask two questions. Oops make that one (after he muttered out loud: "What should I ask 1st?".
Question: "Did you teach him the rules?"
Jack: "What rules?"
Nope, not Jack.
* Wonder why Jack gave him that sweater?
Yeah for Gibbs and Tony.
Tony because he didn’t have to ride backseat middle hump – got to drive instead.
Gibbs because his dad gave him his car.
* And now the tear up moment.
Jack: "Goodbye, Son."
Leroy: "Bye, Dad." (This was the only time he called him by his title and not his 1st name).
Great hug. No pounding each other on the back the way so many men do.
* Memory lane:
That whole scene when Gibbs is remembering meeting Shannon for the 1st time was so touching.
Shannon's rule #1: Never date a lumberjack. It was funny and sweet at the same time.
Everyone needs a code that they can live by.
This is a line from a very popular song from 1970 by Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young). The lyrics are very profound:
Teach Your Children
by Graham Nash
You, who are on the road,
Must have a code
that you can live by.
And so, become yourself,
because the past
Is just a goodbye.
Teach your children well
their father's hell
did slowly go by
and feed them on your dreams
the one they picks
the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
if they told you, you would die
so just look at them and sigh
and know they love you.
And you (Can you hear and)
Of tender years (Do you care and)
Can't know the fears (Can you see we)
That your elders grew by (Must be free to)
And so please help (Teach your children)
Them with your youth (You believe and)
They seek the truth (Make a world that)
Before they can die (We can live in)
Teach your parents well
Their children’s hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks
The one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.
Side Notes:
Now I really want to have a Tony back story. We still have a lot of season to go so perhaps we'll get it this season.
EDIT: Didn’t happen in Season 6.
Song at the end: LOST by Michael Buble. (Thanks Jane).
Only one movie ref:
A Night at the Opera
and one TV ref:
The Dukes of Hazard
No Head Slaps
No McNicknames.
No Director and No Jimmy.
