with the board being a tad slow, I thought I’d throw out a subject for discussion...
seems the LaLa Land writers are either:
1) running out of ideas for new and interesting shows...
actually, this is really nothing new; 99% of the shows on broadcast television are either about doctors/hospitals/medicine OR... law enforcement/courtroom drama OR... really un-funny sitcoms OR... some single guy/single gal looking to fall in ❤️ and find & pick “the one” out of “the herd”...
or have...
2) decided to milk an old “cash cow” and bring back a very popular show from the 80’s and/or 90’s... again, this is nothing new... there’s been the return of shows like Miami Vice (which didn’t last long) and Hawaii 5-0, which has a pretty good run... edit: I stand corrected! Miami Vice was never a t.v. series remake... it was made into a big screen movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Fox ... no wonder it didn’t last long the second time around on t.v. - it was never there!
but lately there’s seems to be a rash of the “oldies” to hit the small box...
the return of Will and Grace...um, did that "new" show ever find a spot? I could never find a day and time to see it - not that I was ever a fan of the show in the first place...
of course, I have to mention the return of Roseanne... was anyone really surprised when R. Barr shot that “cash cow” dead?! in an effort to save the show and the jobs of thousands - o.k., maybe a hundred - they’re gonna rename it to The Conners to see if it flies... do I care? not really...
and come this fall we shall see the return of Murphy Brown... they’re bringing most of the original cast out of retirement - 20 years older (correction, 30 years!) and a few pounds heavier - to see if they can entertain us with Murphy’s wit like they did before... 🤔 we shall see...
and then we have the re-do of Magnum P.I., also coming this fall! Tom Selleck wasn’t available due to the fact that he’s busy being police chief of the NYPD - and making commercials trying to convince senior citizens it’s a really good idea to get a reverse mortgage...(you have to believe him because he's "done his homework", and, hey, he's Tom Sellick!) so, they’re just giving Magnum P.I. (2.0) a new cast... same premise (ex-military man turned private investigator)... same Hawaiian locale... but I’m betting any similarity to the original show and this one will be purely coincidental...
all that said, what’s your opinion on the trend to bring back the old shows? good idea? or... just more lazy writers trying to earn their paychecks?

There's a lot of air time that has to be filled. Have to fill it with something.
There have been a few "original" ideas out there, some have been somewhat successful, other's not so much. Two that come to mind are "Person of Interest", which I liked up till the point they killed off Carter and brought in Samaritan. the other was "Firefly", which FOX canceled 13 episodes in, (and got an ear full for that blunder), original premise and good execution.

1. I had the misfortune to be at the house of someone who had the rehash running on the TV (nobody was paying too much attention to it) and the entire thing was anti-Trump political posturing. I'm no fan of his, but it's the sort of thing I tune into an entertainment show to get away from.
2. Right down to the new Magnum will probably have either a goatee or no facial hair and his chest will be waxed daily. But nevermind Magnum himself, let's face it, there is no substitute for John Hillerman as Higgins, and he was essential to the show.
I know it isn't your style, ABC has Marvel's Agents of SHIELD which is original and interesting, but that's about it.

according to IMDb there is a cast member in the Magnum re-do whose name is “Juliet Higgins”... perhaps a daughter or granddaughter of the original Higgins?
I’ll bet that’s as close as they get to sticking to the original...

I never watched the original Hawaii 5-0 it was on a channel we didn't get.... I knew about the show... I am enjoying to a degree the reboot.... but... I don't think I'll enjoy Magnum.... the previews aren't all that interesting.... I'm not a fan of comedies so I can't speak to the Will and Grace thing....
I'm wondering what the show "God Friended Me" is about... I've seen commercials for it...... I tried Reverie.... mainly because I enjoy the work that Dennis Haysbert has done... but I can't say the show captured me... I have it stashed on the DVR.... maybe because it is a summer show...
Perhaps I've just gotten tired of a few minutes of the show followed by a bunch of annoying commercials that I'm finding myself streaming shows...

I have never been a fan of "rebooting" or "reimagining" classic TV shows and movies. And as a rule, I won't watch them. The only exception was the reboot of "Battlestar Galactica" which IMO, was way, way better than the original. I absolutely despise the new "Hawaii Five-0". I watched maybe 3 episodes of it before I tuned out. I've seen epidoes of it here and there since then. What really killed it for me was this new McGarrett had a scene where he's wearing a Navy dress uniform and he's sporting a five o'clock shadow. Everyone knows that don't cut it in the real Navy. This new "Magnum P.I." is from the same doofus who gave us the new "Hawaii Five-0" so IMO, it'll likely suck just as bad.

I personally am really looking forward to the new Murphy Brown, as I loved the original. I am not normally a fan of situational comedies, as I find for the most part the "situations" asinine, but Murphy Brown was so consistently acerbically witty. And who gives a cr@p if they are heavier than they were 30 years ago - aren't we all?
As for Magnum, I think the success of the original series was the charm of Tom Selleck (such charm is unfortunately completely absent from Blue Bloods), and the interplay between Selleck and Hillerman. Since it is the same team that is behind the new 5-0, I just see a high body count. I also have heard rumors of a cross-over with the new 5-0.
I do find it sad that Hollywood is having a hard time coming up with fresh ideas. But, when they do have some great shows that have loyal followings, like Timeless or Grimm, they kill them anyways. Medical/Cop/Lawyer shows are cheap.

Me too! I loved Murphy Brown and will definitely give it a watch! I will probably tune into Magnum PI but I don't have high hopes for it. I watch so little series tv that it will have to be strong to hold my attention.

I will try it.

oh, please don’t misunderstand, brat, I don’t care if they’re heavier than they were 30 years ago; it was just a passing comment (which was probably best left unsaid)...
30 years later I sure wouldn’t win any beauty contest - in fact, when I look in the mirror after I get up in the morning, I damn near scare myself!
I’m looking forward to the “new” Murphy Brown, too, but I hope it doesn’t get too political... like Hari Seldon says, I don’t watch shows for that kind of stuff... I get enough of it with the daily local, national, and world news reports...
sadly two characters that I liked a lot on the original show have died - Robert Pastorelli (Eldin) and Jay Thomas (Jerry Gold)... 😥 it would have been nice to see them again...

Here's one for you.
’24’ Prequel: Jack Bauer Origin Story in Development at Fox
Longtime “24” showrunner Howard Gordon and co-creators Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran are writing together
Jack Bauer’s story may not be over at Fox just yet, as the network has a “24” prequel series in the works, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Longtime “24” showrunner Howard Gordon and the co-creators of the original series, Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran, are working on an idea for a prequel, which would trace the origin story of Jack Bauer, originally played by Kiefer Sutherland.
The trio are writing the story together, but there is currently no word on how soon the project would come to fruition.
Fox already tried once to reboot the franchise with “24: Legacy,” which aired for one season in 2017. The series, which featured actor Corey Hawkins (Eric Carter) taking over for Sutherland as the lead, failed to catch on and was soon canceled. At the time of “Legacy’s” cancellation, the network had been considering other ways to keep the franchise on the air in some form.
The original “24” premiered in November 2001 and ran for 192 episodes over eight seasons until 2010. A made-for-TV film, “24: Redemption,” aired between seasons six and seven. In 2014, Fox revived the series for a limited run of 12 episodes called, “24: Live Another Day.”
Just saw this on IMDb. Bet you didn't see that one coming.

Honestly, it looks like a modern 'reboot' of the TV show "Early Edition" that ran from 1996 to 2000. I've seen the extended trailer (above) several times. I'm not holding out a lot of hope for it, but Violett Beane is easy on the eyes.

I really liked Early Edition - watched it all the time! (can’t believe it’s been 20+ years since it first aired)
I find the trailer for God Friended Me interesting - I like the premise, and it looks like something I might enjoy... I hate to sound pessimistic, but I’m afraid if I get too attached to it, it’ll get cancelled...😕 (it’s happened before - good shows get xld while silly, stupid sitcoms just go on and on and on 😞 - go figure!)
