NCIS Star Mark Harmon Reveals the Secret to His Long-Lasting Success: 'You Earn Luck' By Kate Coyne and Natalie Stone --- February 20, 2019 08:00 AM
"I come from working stock, and I’m proud of that," Mark Harmon tells PEOPLE
After four decades in the spotlight, Mark Harmon has mastered the keys to his successful career — and credits them to one of the most influential people in his life: his father.
“My dad taught me, if it’s not true, don’t worry about it,” the NCIS star tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story.
“I come from working stock, and I’m proud of that. You have to get up every day and just try hard,” says Harmon, 67. “That’s what I still wake up willing to do: try my hardest.”
Harmon was born and raised with two older sisters — Kristin, who died last year at age 72, and Kelly, 70, who lives in Los Angeles — in Burbank by his late dad, football and broadcasting icon Tom Harmon, and his wife, artist Elyse Knox.
Tom was a college star who went on to play two seasons in the NFL and Harmon followed in his footsteps, playing quarterback and eventually starting for UCLA.
“I’m a practice guy, a repetition guy,” he says. “You can tell me I can’t do something, but I’m likely to take that as incentive to prove you wrong. I’m a tough guy, I’m a jock, so you can yell at me all day long, and that won’t hurt me — I’m just going to try to get better. In this business I’ve used that to my advantage.”
Although Harmon’s dad died suddenly at age 70 when the star was just 38, the longtime actor continues to follow the profound advice that Tom imparted.
“Work your ass off, and don’t let the effort show,” he says. “Also: Treat people the same, not based on who they are or what they are. Show them common kindness. Don’t be colored by their fame or profession. I don’t get all excited by people blowing smoke up my ass. You have to stay honest.”
While Harmon is widely recognized for his starring role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in CBS’ NCIS — currently the highest-rated drama on network TV — for the past 16 years, the Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated actor has been a household name for decades.
In 1986, Harmon, who shares two sons — Sean, 30, and Ty, 26 — with his wife of 31 years, actress Pam Dawber, was named PEOPLE’s second-ever Sexiest Man Alive.
“Oh, it isn’t that I hate it, really,” Harmon says with a sly grin about the the honorable title. “It’s just that I’m not about to take it seriously. And let’s just say I think maybe a few too many people have.”
But fame doesn’t faze the the notoriously private actor.
Rather, it’s honed a deep sense of gratitude in the father of two — and a pushed him to be better at his craft each day.
“This choice, this career, requires you to be all in. Your job is to be prepared for the opportunity — it will come, you just won’t know when,” he says.
“So until then, all you can do is invest in yourself,” the star advises. “I’ve always worked hard, I’ve always tried to pay attention to the little things — but here’s the real secret: there are no little things.”
And while some may be struck by luck alone and propelled to stardom, Harmon believes his long-lasting career in Hollywood required more.
“I’m a lucky guy,” he says, “but you earn luck.”

Mark Harmon on His 31-Year Marriage to Pam Dawber: 'I'm Proud to Be Married to Her'
By Kate Coyne and Aurelie Corinthios --- February 20, 2019 09:30 AM
After 40 years in the spotlight — and 16 years on NCIS — Mark Harmon is opening up about what matters most: his marriage, his kids and the value of a hard day’s work.
Sitting down with PEOPLE for this week’s cover story, Harmon, who plays Navy investigator Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the hit CBS show, reveals the secret to his 31-year marriage to actress Pam Dawber: maturity.
“We were both in our thirties when we got married, so hopefully the stupid stuff we did earlier,” he says. “That’s probably the closest I have to what the key is.” (Harmon and the Mork & Mindy star, both 67, share two children: sons Sean, 30, and Ty, 26.)
One other thing that helps them click? Their differences. Harmon says Dawber was actually opposed to him taking what would turn out to be a beloved role — the goofy teacher Freddy Shoop in 1987’s hit comedy Summer School.
“I wanted to do it just because I was excited to work with [director] Carl Reiner,” he says. “That was a game changer for me, like, ‘He thinks I can do this?!’ and that meant a lot. But Pam said, ‘Don’t do that. Don’t do this movie.’ We don’t generally like the same thing, and that’s been healthy for us, actually.”
Asked about the distinctive ring — in the shape of an eagle head — on his wedding finger, he explains, “We think it was my grandfather’s, because it was in a box of things that my dad left.”
“I wear it or a few others I have because when I’m not shooting, I like to make sure I have something on my ring finger, because I’m proud to be married, and I’m proud of who I’m married to,” he says. “I’m just so proud of her.”

Mark Harmon Describes What Will Spell the End of NCIS — and How Long He’ll Stay with the Show By Kate Coyne and Jodi Guglielmi --- February 21, 2019 09:30 AM
After 16 years on a hit television show, Mark Harmon‘s luck isn’t lost on him.
In this week’s cover story, the actor opens up to PEOPLE about his starring role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in CBS’s NCIS, saying even after nearly two decades, he has no plans to walk away from the show.
“I’ve always thought if there’s ever a time where the writers are walking into the room and going ‘I don’t know what to do,’ then I think we all have to look at each other and call it a day,” he says in the new issue, on stands Friday. “But we’re not there yet.”
The show, which is currently the highest-rated drama on network TV, spent its first six seasons flying under the radar before hitting it big and garnering more than 12 million viewers a week and birthing two spin-off series.
“We’re doing better ratings this year than last, which for a show of this age is sort of remarkable,” he says.
While some actors might grow restless after so many years in the same job, Harmon is nothing but grateful.
“I’ve been around long enough to know what this is,” he says. “That commitment is part of what I signed up for; I know when this show ends that’s it — there won’t be anything else like this for me.
With no end in sight for the show, Harmon says he is happy to keep reporting for duty.
“Nothing goes on forever, but you’ve got to respect what this show is doing, 16 years in, and how it’s doing it, and the people who are there punching in every morning and building what this is,” he says. “There’s a tremendous about of pride there, so I see no reason to leave.”
