Ice Queen and Meltdown
Since this is an NCIS board I'll do it (mostly) from Gibbs and Company's P.O.V.
The episode opens with a "Boy Scout" troop shooting arrows at targets. One kid doesn't hit his mark and the arrow goes astray. His troop leader sends him off to retrieve it and the poor kid gets more than he bargained for - the body of a woman in a Navy uniform up in a tree with his arrow in it.
* Gibbs, Tony and Viv (Vivienne Blackadder) are in the NCIS van. Tony is driving, Viv in the middle and Gibbs in the passenger seat. They're talking about the case at hand when Tony is recalling a case he worked on while with the Baltimore P.D.: A body was found propped up in a recliner watching TV (sound familiar?) and a rookie cop unloaded his revolver into the body because he was so startled.
Gibbs lets him tell the story and then says:
"You know what I think DiNozzo, YOU were the rookie"
Tony denies it.
But was he telling the truth? Probably not.
* Ducky at the scene - goes off on one of his (now famous) tangents about a case from 15 years ago.
* Gibbs with the little boy who fired the arrow. It was so fatherly of him to tell him that "If you don't want to dream about her you won't." He sounded so sincere I'm sure that little boy slept nightmare free when he went to bed that night. Awwwwww.
* Unlike Kate who will join the team later on, Viv probably had some investigative experience since she'd been with the FBI. (Not that it made any difference - she wasn't very good.)
* VERY glad they didn’t bring over the bluish "horror movie" effects when NCIS became its own series. Yes, they used the P.O.V. from the victim for awhile but at least it wasn't blue.
* C'mon Harriet, you're not that dumb. When Admiral Chegwidden told his staff about a body being found (and all other JAG lawyers were accounted for) she says: “I hope it's not Lt. Singer."
How many other pregnant, unaccounted for JAG lawyers does the agency have?
* Viv's desk at NCIS HQ is the one that McGee will eventually occupy.
* Yeah! We got to see Director Morrow.
* The Al-Quida (sp) baddie that was grabbed got the first RED slash. This scene makes it apparent that Viv hasn't been with Gibbs/NCIS very long.
* It was quite evident to me that Viv didn't like Ducky. His flirting seemed to make her mad. She also didn't like the fact that she came thisclose to having to watch the autopsy. (Note: He was rather creepy)
* JAG character comment: Rabb's attitude and evasiveness made ME suspicious of him so it's no wonder Gibbs was. His arrogance was not helping his case.
* I wonder why Gibbs gave the Admiral 7 minutes with Rabb? I understand what he was doing but the amount of time was weird.
* The Admiral is questioning Rabb in his office. Suddenly the light bulb goes off over A.J.'s head:
Admiral: "Why that sneaky Bastard." He explains to Rabb that Gibbs got the Admiral to question him.
Rabb: "Do you really think he's that devious?"
Silly question Harm, OF COURSE HE IS. You just don't know him like we do.
* Gibbs had another agent on his team - Dobbs. Wonder why he didn't make the series?
* Other than the story moment in the crime van, Tony was less "Tony." His patience out on that very cold bridge spraying for prints was impressive. And it paid off and he didn’t complain about being sent to do it or that he was freezing.
* Abby's Lab:
She had her Caf-Pow!
Her "art" already hung: Shotgun shattered backbone; _________ cerebellum.
She was rather turned on that the Major knew what they were.
* Did anyone else notice that Tony and Abby were flirting with each other in a non-brother/sister way?
* JAG character comment.
Bud: "I did not have sex with that woman." (Meaning Lt. Singer, of course.)
* Gibbs and Viv are in a car (conversation not important) when the shot moves to the outside we see the car driving away from the camera, toward the Capitol Building. This shot is used at the very end of the opening credits of our show.
* Time of death on Lt. Singer:
Original estimate: 3 weeks
Actual: 3 months.
She had been frozen which stalled decomposition.
* Gibbs recognized the country code for Russia when Abby was able to read the cocktail napkin found on Singer. Said he learned it when he was undercover for 6 months. Was this when he was married to Stephanie? “We’ll always have Moscow.” Or during the op with Jenny which seemed to cross borders.
* BIG MISTAKE by Abby. When she was using lift paper to get prints from the Lt.'s car, she wasn't wearing gloves.
* Abby and Tony set up a date. Would have liked to be a fly on the wall to witness it.
* Viv and Ducky take 2: Gibbs takes Tony with him to "Benziger's?" to talk with the employees.
Viv: "They get drinks, I get Ducky."
She was obviously unhappy about this.
When he flirted she mentioned his age with her nose crinkled. Bless Ducky for saying something to the effect of even men his age are often in pursuit of sex.
* Rabb really was an arrogant S.O.B. - trying to pull rank on Gibbs with the "call me sir" comment because Gibbs, as a reservist was enlisted.
Gibbs: (paraphrasing) "I don't have to call you sir, salute you or give you any military courtesy. I'm an NCIS Special Agent." Take that Commander Rabb!!!
* A swearword that's allowed on American TV. When Gibbs is questioning Rabb and he brings up knowing about the meeting between Singer and Rabb at Benzigers, Rabb can't hide his shock. Tony says: "Buggered."
Lots of us movie watchers know what this word translates to and I'm sure the censors do too, but they still let it be said.
We (American TV shows) need to use it more.
* Continuity Error (discussed at length over the last several seasons): Gibbs tells Rabb that he's been with NCIS for 19 years.
* LOVE LOVE LOVE that Gibbs asked the question that Rabb was NOT expecting:
Gibbs: "Would you kill for your brother?"
WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!
* No matter how hard I try, I can't find myself rooting for Rabb. I was watching JAG full-time during Season 8 and I DID root for him at the time, but I can't take myself back there so I love that Gibbs got the better of him.
END Meltdown
BEGIN Ice Queen
* Unless I heard it wrong (or Elliott and Harmon sound alike) I think it was Mark doing the "Previously on JAG..." voice over.
* I'm not a big fan of Faith Coleman, but I liked her in this episode. Rabb was being his arrogant self - questioning her credentials/capabilities and she didn't take his egotistical crap.
* Another Faith comment - we know she's rather anal-retentive (especially about pencils :-D ) from Call of Silence but it was fun to see that she was even in this series.
* Major (The Prosecutor) is talking to Abby about her testimony. So HE'S the one who convinced her to "dress for court."
I did like him giving her advice to help her nerves.
Major Jack M: "Imagine all of those uniforms naked."
Abby: "Including you?"
If the smile on his face was any indication, Major Jack seemed to like this idea.
* Abby in court. Bad idea. Ab's is good at many things but being under pressure in court is not one of them.
* Ducky in court: See comment on Abby.
* Gibbs in court: Good. (well, duh, of course he is. )
* Viv wasn't very good at her job. She only got the barest of essentials about the terrorist. It definitely was not good enough for Gibbs.
I get the impression that she was assigned to his team rather than hired by him.
* Dress uniform cover at scene has Rabb's name in it. Things aren't looking too good for him, eh?
* Side note: I'm a bit surprised that CBS didn't try to get DPB to NOT have Abby when they gave the green light to NCIS. Networks love to meddle and Pauley as Abby was certainly unconventional.
* I thought it was odd that the terrorist case was going on in the background of the Rabb case. Maybe they could have carried it over as the Series Premiere for NCIS. They could have found a way to exit Viv and bring in Kate (she could have been with a different agency than the Secret Service).
* Woo Hoo DiNozzo for following your "Gibbs" gut in regards to Rabb's cover. Crime 3 months ago, cover there for less than a month - planted.
* Tony again. Never underestimate him in interrogation, he was great right from the get-go. He lets the suspect think he doesn't know what he's doing and then WHAM-O!, he hits them in the head with competence. Gotcha Commander Lindsey!
* W.K. Stratton (Cmdr Lindsey) is a Bellisario veteran. Among Bellisario productions he's appeared on (other than this one):
Baa Baa Black Sheep (aka: Black Sheep Squadron) (Played Larry Casey)
Airwolf
Magnum, PI (murderer on that show too. He killed a surfer girl named Casey – Hmmm, Casey is a popular name with DPB)
Tequila and Bonetti
Quantum Leap - Character named Larry
* Gibbs is out on the ship - got info from Amad Bin Atwa over dinner. The CIA had been trying for days (or longer). You sometimes catch more flies with honey fellas.
* While on the ship Gibbs gets a couple of packages - Tony and Viv who are there to follow up on the intel derived from Gibbs' dinner with the Amad Bin Atwa
* We learn in this episode that Tony speaks Spanish.
* Viv blew it by staring down the baddies on the docks and ship. I know her brother was killed on the USS Cole but this error could have gotten Gibbs, Tony and herself killed - and almost did.
Because of this I'm fairly certain of 2 things.
1. She came to NCIS only to get the B******* who killed her brother.
2. Gibbs either accepted her resignation or he fired her (or told the Director that he didn't want her on his team anymore).
I can't say Viv was badly written because she wasn't but the way she was written wouldn't have fit in with the tone of NCIS
All in all I liked these 2 episodes of JAG because they introduced viewers to Gibbs, Tony, Abby and Ducky.
I'm glad that the tone of NCIS is so very different than JAG which was a true to form drama. I like the 75% drama + 25% humor (I just made up those #s) NCIS brings us.
