Although the villain was fairly obvious, this was a much better episode than I expected.

It's been some time since I've actually said that this episode is a "keeper". I loved the episode, loved the flashbacks & loved each of the characters they played. It was a fun team episode despite the cause of death.

It was like the real "NCIS", the way it used to be. I really liked it.

Well, the murder occurred in 1972, and us old folks remember Mark Spitz in the 1972 Olympics. He sported that handlebar mustache and it suddenly became a craze.
I think Bishop should wear late '60s styles from now on, who's with me?

um, sorry tonydickson, but the thing that WV was sporting above his lip looks nothing like a handlebar mustache - it's way too short! actually, it looks more like a truncated "porn 'stache"...

nasI thought McGee when portraying the brother looked like a porn star.

nasFrom the photos that’s what it looked like to me but circa 1970s, ala “Boogie Nights”.

When I first read that there was going to be an episode with flash backs (with DiNozzo Senior), I wasn't sure what to think. But the photos that Emily posted got me intrigued and then when it got out that RJ wasn't able to film, I was curious as to how they would re-write the episode without him. Honestly, I enjoyed the episode so much that I'm glad we didn't have Senior as a distraction! The flashbacks were done well and the haphazard way they found evidence helped to keep what happened a mystery throughout the episode even if the brother was the last suspect standing fairly early on! Even if the guilty party is obvious, I've always found that a good story will still make the episode enjoyable.
I'll start with my one little critique first before I put down some thoughts. I really didn't think that they did a good job laying out the motive that the brother had for murdering his sister. I think they could have done a better job building that story in the past, which would have given Sean a bigger role in the flashbacks. Although given his wardrobe (and those glasses!), maybe it was a good thing we didn't see more of him! Spencer's jealousy of the (clearly) favorite child and the forensic accounting that McGee did that revealed that the brother had been passed over in favor of his sister just didn't feel like enough of a reason for him to jump to murder. Maybe a scene showing the dad passing over the brother in favor of Annie would have helped reinforce the motive?
Other random thoughts:
- I saw someone online point out that Annie and Arturo were two names from the movie Overboard and seemed to be referencing the story of the drowned lovers. But in the story, the ill-fated couple was Arturo and Katerina. Annie was the name of Goldie Hawn's character. Close but not quite.
- Art had been working at the Navy museum for the last seventeen years.... one for each NCIS season?
- I immediately suspected the brother when he claimed that selling the coin would save his company. A cash infusion wouldn't help a company whose sole business revolved around a dying industry.
- Aunt Bertha (in both eras) was great. I love that she out-lived everyone. (Alive and kicking!) Clearly she was well-pickled! And K. Callan was a fantastic cameo as the older version of Bertha. I was trying to figure out where I knew her from and now that I looked her up, I realize that it was from the show Lois and Clark. I loved her on that show!
- Was this the first time we had a crypt on NCIS? Usually it's cemeteries and the occasional mausoleum. Annie was well preserved in her crypt too.
- I never would have realized that it was Mark playing the guy who saved Art and his buddy in the Vietnam flashback until David North posted the picture! Clearly they were doing their best to save budget on extras this episode!
- I'm pretty sure that the brown leather coat that Spencer was wearing in the present was the same coat that McGee as Spencer was wearing in the past.
- I liked that they used Spencer's allergy to Chrysanthemums to get his DNA and the line, 'you can't steal my snot!' was great.
- The ending was bittersweet with the reveal that Art spent so much time in the Navy museum so he could look at the photo of his lost love. I'm glad that Annie's dad had a change of heart, it's just too bad that it didn't happen sooner. I can't help thinking that if Art and Annie would have gotten engaged, that she would still be alive.
All in all, I thought the cast did great with their alternate personalities. It was such a fun episode!
