When I first read that there was going to be an episode with flash backs (with DiNozzo Senior), I wasn't sure what to think. But the photos that Emily posted got me intrigued and then when it got out that RJ wasn't able to film, I was curious as to how they would re-write the episode without him. Just a gut feeling, but I think Sr. would have played the father in the flashbacks instead of MH.It wouldn't help, but the brother seemed like he might be clueless enough to think it would.100% agree. Well pickled and keeping the brine flowing.Nope. There was one in one of the early seasons where a crypt exploded and there were a bunch of extra skeletons in it. Gibbs and Mann were dating, but still competing for jurisdiction.

I read somewhere that he was supposed to be in the first scene thanking everyone but used Jimmy & the notes instead. But it does make sense that Sr would play the father, he does play the "We're better then them" attitude roles.

I thought there was a difference between a crypt and a mausoleum but now that I look it up, they're pretty much the same. I remembered the exploding vault episode with Colonel Mann. I thought this might have been the first instance with a family mausoleum... but then I remembered that Vance was left sharing a coffin with a body when he was kidnapped before the Navy Yard bombing. I guess with seventeen seasons, it is near impossible to do something completely original!

I can't believe that just a few weeks from suffering with the literal resurrection of the Barbie Ninja Warrior Princess, we are treated with this gem! From the ridiculous to the sublime. The only thing that was missing was a role in a flashback for David McCallum.
Felt like the NCIS of the early seasons.

The flashback episode with the main characters playing other people in the flashback isn't an original idea either. One of the best episodes of the series Castle, 'The Blue Butterfly' was like that, along with 'The DB Cooper Job' and 'The Van Gogh Job' in the series Leverage. Even DS9 had one, though I don't remember the episode name.

JAG, NCIS's ancestor, had at least one episode like this one. The one I remember was a WWII episode. What made it different is that many of the JAG officers played enlisted personnel and vice versa.
There may have been another flashback episode that starts with Rabb at the Vietnam Memorial, where he meets up with someone, and the flashback begins----HELP OUT THERE IF I AM MIS-REMEMBERING!

JAG might have done it twice, X Files did it, and Gilligan's Island did it more than once if memory serves

I know the general concept isn't new (The Blue Butterfly from Castle was probably one of my favorite episodes of that series!). But it is new to NCIS. Actually, Ephemera was very similar to The Blue Butterfly where Castle imagined his friends playing the parts of the people in the flashback, only this time the results were a little more tragic in that Annie and Arturo didn't get their 'happily ever after' like Joe and Vera did.

That's ok though, because it means Bishop and Torres aren't getting together, even in another time.

I just wanted to tell you I think that the DS9 episode that was referenced in this discussion was played on BBC America tonight.

Just watched the episode and enjoyed it - what a fun episode!
I did not realize that Palmer and Kacie were the officers until I looked at the thread now and saw the pictures!
I loved Aunt Bertha!
I am an avid reader and think I have a good vocabulary but I had not seen the word ephemera ....
On a personal note - I was very young for most of the Viet Nam war but it is hard to believe it was 50 years ago!!! I guess that means I am getting old!
