Wow. Did not disappoint!
More to add later, but the last scene was phenomenal
It was so symbolic that it ended up being the last episode of this season.
Right now, fighting a war of a different sort that we did not want and do not understand I wonder if health care workers will be the same for a while. The connection that I felt to some of what was being expressed was so very real.
Loved Christopher Lloyd!

Thanks for sharing this Llyan. When I saw that scene, I thought things did not bode well for Omar, ala Pacci.

I cannot tell a lie! I cheated! I watched the episode tonight!
I’m a real fan of Christopher Lloyd, and my curiosity got the best of me... I just hoped that Ms. Monreal wouldn’t screw up the storyline...
all I can say is “Wow!” what a beautiful, touching, memorable story! Christopher Lloyd did a great job! soooo believable in the part of the feisty 95 year old Joe... and I can’t remember when I enjoyed watching Mark Harmon as LJG more than I did tonight!
that final scene was a real tear jerker 😢 - and the episode dedication to all the “frontline heroes” was absolutely perfect!
some promises are meant to be broken - and I’m glad I broke this one!

This was a great show..... best in a long time. I liked how they dealt with the obvious that he wouldn't have been old enough. I am glad Gibbs opened up to Tim with how he felt coming back would there be enough of him for Shannon and Kelly to recognize....

A very good episode, but there is a way it could have been significantly better: Dr. Mallard could have been doing most of the analysis scenes instead of Jack. I'm well aware of DMcC's limitation on appearances, but just imagine him in one of the scenes together with Mark Harmon and Christopher Lloyd. Not a huge thing, but it also would have been appropriate for Kacie to have been in the scene where the fragments are revealed since she would have been the one that did the analysis of the metal.

I read that this show ran 15 minutes long.... I hope when they issue the DVD's or release to Netflix we have the option of the directors cut with all the 15 minutes included. Part of the cut time was the talk Gibbs had with Tim at the end.

Best episode in a while. Lloyd was terrific and I think it one of Harmon's best renditions in some time. One of the better bits was Bishop and Torres not knowing anything about Pearl Harbor (except that it happened). Probably true of most Americans. All in all a good season for McGee, but they could have done more with him (he's gotten to be a pretty fair actor). Agree with the comment above that Ducky would have been a better choice to deal with Joe Smith's issues than Jack (age having much to do with that). I know this wasn't supposed to be the finale this season, but it made a really good one.

They recently did a survey of millennials. The majority could not name one of the concentration camps from the Holocaust. It was so sad to see that.
I also agree having Ducky would have been great.

What an absolutely wonderful episode. Ranks right up there with Call of Silence. The episode had the perfect balance of humor an pathos. Christopher Lloyd was amazing as Joe, and Mark Harmon put in another solid performance. The side story of Tia Lupe and Uncle Roland's fiesta was a hoot (and reminds me of when Gibbs was receiving the phone calls in an S1 or S2 episode about a Volkswagen for sale). I was crying at the end, partly because Joe didn't make it (but he got his "happy ending"), but also because Gibbs finally opened up to someone, and that someone was Tim, the person he went to hell and back with, and the person he most trusts.
I'm so glad Llyan told us about "Omar", because when I saw that scene, I was thinking "Pacci" all over again. Now I have to go back and look for him as a Probie.
I had to go back and re-listen to what Nick said to Tia Lupe. I was cracking up too hard the first time. I knew Nick was going to set Tim up. I loved that Nick was not self-centered in this episode, and he set out to educate himself about Pearl Harbor. Of course he didn't say anything about enchiladas to Tia Lupe! But he did tell Tim that it would not be good to not show up for Tia Lupe!
The look Joe gave Tim in the elevator when Tim told Joe that he wasn't "in-charge" was wonderful! I also loved Leon's excitement in explaining about the shrapnel found in Joe's arm. And great pickup by Gibbs!
There was some great non-verbal acting as well. Nick's look of pure astonishment when Joe asked for a root beer, and Gibbs' very tiny hint a a smile and the roll of the eyes to the right at the "phoof", and both Nick and Ellie's impressed looks when Joe popped the top off of the root beer with his thumb.
I have to wonder why Joe enlisted before the war. You don't hear about too many underage enlistments prior to WWII. My dad enlisted as a 16 year old after the war started - he would have been 95 this August. He enlisted with his two brothers. I guess some folks did enlist underage to get out of bad situations.
The one line I did not understand (and maybe the explanation was lost on the cutting room floor) was the one where Joe was repairing the ancient slide projector. "My mom had a few [photos] I was supposed to get, but she sent me to live with my uncle. My brother was supposed to pick me up, but he never did."
I really did not care for Jack in this episode. Her character really seemed unnecessary and borderline obnoxious. And like others had said, I think Ducky would have been better.
That little quibble aside, a contender for my favorite episode!

Beautiful post usmcbrat
I thought about that too, all Gibbs and Tim have gone through together. But I also thought about Tim being on the other side of the equation - saying that his father had "changed" after his time in Viet Nam - I believe that the episode was last season (if anyone remembers the episode feel free to mention it - that episode was also very good and might warrant a rewatch). He may have been uniquely qualified to understand...

Beautiful post usmcbrat I thought about that too, all Gibbs and Tim have gone through together. You're thinking of Fragments (the episode with Ray who had been jailed for supposedly murdering his CO in Vietnam) but they also covered it a little in the flashback epsiode Once Upon a Tim when Tim's dad tried to get him to go to the Naval Academy. Tim argued that his father told him that Vietnam made him the man he is but he never explained how and the Senior McGee slapped him (and never explained himself). I totally agree that Tim benefits from hearing Gibbs' talk about his time in the war since it probably puts his experiences with his biological father into perspective just as much as it does for his surrogate (Gibbs) father.
I loved the Garcia Family Fiesta side story. It was a nice light counterpoint to a very heavy main story with Joe. I knew that before the end of the show that Tim was going to end up going to the fiesta. Hopefully he, Delilah and the kids had fun!

Speaking of which, did we see Delilah this season? I don't recall her.
