Maria Bello Exiting NCIS in Season 18 By Matt Webb Mitovich / July 24 2020, 4:06 PM PDT
Maria Bello is set to exit CBS’ NCIS, after a three-year run on TV’s most watched drama.
Bello joined NCIS for Season 15, as forensic psychologist Jacqueline “Jack” Sloane. Working off of a three-year contract, our sister site Deadline reports, Bello will leave the series eight episodes into the coming season, which is penciled in to premiere sometime this fall.
Bello’s previous TV credits include Goliath, Touch, Prime Suspect and ER.
NCIS’ 17th season fell four episodes short due to the pandemic-related shutdown, and thus ended with Episode 20 guest-starring TVLine Performer of the Week Christopher Lloyd. Episode 21, which was two days away from production, is “probably what we will shoot first [whenever production resumes],” co-showrunner Frank Cardea told TVLine, while the one after that will mark the series’ 400th overall.
“We have a lot of flexibility to air the first five or six episodes [of Season 18] in any order we want,” Cardea noted, “but we will still shoot 400 as the second one and air it as the second one.” (Get details on the Episode 400 storyline.)

Guess they couldn't figure out what to do with her. Can't say I'm terribly saddened by her leaving, her back story was a messy Greek Tragedy.

I did not dislike the character but yes her backstory was a little complicated and honestly there are a lot of team members which means limited time for all. She probably would be better as a recurring guest.

after the “ninja-girl” storyline, I stopped watching the show regularly, but whenever I saw an episode that had Maria Bello’s “Jack” in it I thought she always acted so strange... I remember one scene where she was in a coffee shop and she rambled on and on and ON to a complete stranger about her daughter...I thought, “man, she is really weird!”
speaking of “a lot of team members...limited time”, luckysmom, I’ve thought of that since I’ve been watching a very old series on late night t.v. on Saturday nights... it was a show called Hill Street Blues which aired for 7 seasons from 1981-87... well, that show had at least 10 “main characters”, each with their own story and background - and how they managed to cover every single one of them was simply amazing! I have often compared that situation to NCIS and thought, “wow, NCIS can’t seem to get 4 main characters right, but Hill Street Blues does it for all their characters!” imo, the writing makes the difference...
NCIS’ writers run hot & cold - some good storylines, but way too many “clunkers”... Hill Street Blues was consistently good - until a new group of show runners and writers came on board in Season 7 and changed the whole dynamic of the show... and that was the end of that! they pulled the plug, and HSB didn’t have a Season 8!
I’ve thought perhaps NCIS should have called it quits several seasons ago, but it continues to be popular with some - and a $$$-maker - so they will keep at it despite the bad writing and seriously unrealistic plots and storylines...
so sorry folks, I didn’t mean to highjack the subject, but luckymom’s comment just triggered a thought that I’ve had for a while, and I just wanted to share it with y’all...

Loved Hill Street Blues - I watched all the early seasons! I agree they did a great job up until the end of the series!

Although I haven’t watched since the “she’s not dead” episode but have read the about episodes here and it seems there was nothing for her character to do and they just focused on her angsty past.

Can't say that I will miss her. Actress was fine, just the character was bla.
