NCIS Will Start Season 18 With a Backwards Time Jump — Find Out Why By Matt Webb Mitovich / September 21 2020, 11:59 AM PDTCBS’ NCIS will jump back in time — to November of last year — and then stay there for a bit, when it kicks off Season 18 later this fall.
TV’s most-watched drama left off with a powerful ersatz season finale, in which Christopher Lloyd guest-starred as Pearl Harbor survivor Joe Smith. That episode closed with Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) inviting McGee to grab and seat and get an earful of his own war stories, from Kuwait. Gibbs then traveled to Hawaii for the ceremonial interring of the recently passed Joe Smith’s remains.
But when NCIS returns with new episodes sometime in November (by current estimations), we will not see the Gibbs who just visited Hawaii but the Gibbs who mysteriously went off the grid in Season 17’s eighth episode.
“We had an episode last year called ‘Musical Chairs,’ where Gibbs disappears from the squad room to go on a mission, and then he shows up at the end of the episode with a black eye,” co-showrunner Steve Binder reminded during TVLine’s in-depth Fall Preview Q&A. At the time, Gibbs upon resurfacing never offered up a clear or verified answer as to where he had run off to, but Season 18’s early episodes will fill in some blanks.
“We are going to pick up Season 18 with that mission that Gibbs was on, back in time,” Binder explained. And as a result of this timey wimeyness, “We’re in a pre-COVID world for a little while,” circa November/December 2019.
Once the multi-episode arc exploring Gibbs’ mysterious mission is complete — during which the rest of the team will be seen back in D.C., dealing with weekly bodies/cases — “We’ll be in a COVID world at that point,” Binder said, though those episodes may not air until February.
As previously reported, offshoot NCIS: New Orleans will address the pandemic directly via a Loretta-centric storyline, while NCIS: Los Angeles, I hear, will be addressing COVID but not overtly.

Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on The Boys, TWD, Lucifer, Supernatural, NCIS: LA, Manifest, SEAL Team, NCIS and More! By Matt Webb Mitovich / September 24 2020, 11:41 AM PDTAny indication how Maria Bello will bow out of her role as Jack during the new season of NCIS? –Michelle “When we’re trying to figure out how to exit a character, one thing we always ask is: ‘What does that character deserve?'” co-showrunner Frank Cardea explains. “And the character of Sloane is a very strong character, and a passionate character, so we’re going to really have her go on something worthy of that.” But before she leaves the canvas entirely, viewers’ “ongoing wonderment about what’s going on between her and Gibbs” will be resolved, the EP assures.

NCIS Bosses Preview Season 18's Backward Time Jump, Episode 400's Young Returns and {Spoiler}'s Exit By Matt Webb Mitovich / November 12 2020, 2:52 PM PSTCBS’ NCIS opens Season 18 — and inches closer to Episode 400 — this Tuesday at 8/7c, with a narrative twist that will transport us and Gibbs one year into the past.
In the season premiere, which pretty quickly flashes back to this time last year (and stays there), Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) and Fornell (returning guest star Joe Spano) attempt to track down the leader of a ring who supplied drugs to Fornell’s daughter, nearly killing her in the Season 16 finale. Meanwhile, the team back home deals with the case of a missing cadaver.
TVLine invited executive producers Frank Cardea and Steven Binder to tease the timey-wimey episodes ahead, and more.
TVLINE | Frank, when you and I last spoke, you were hoping that Episode 400 would still air as No. 400, even with the pandemic-related delays. Did your dream come true? FRANK CARDEA | Yes, it did. We actually shot them out of order, but it will air as 400 (on Nov. 24, titled “Everything Starts Somewhere”).
TVLINE | Is it still going to feature a Young Ducky and Young Gibbs? CARDEA | It most certainly will. And it’s written by the great Steve Binder.
TVLINE | Steve, what juncture in the Gibbs/Ducky relationship will we visit? STEVE BINDER | Well, the story revolves around their first meeting and they’re at a crossroads in their lives, each of them. I won’t go into the exact nature of the crossroads, but it’s a very pivotal moment in both of their lives and they’re able to help each other get on the path that leads them to where we find them in the present day.
TVLINE | Did you recycle the previous young versions of them? BINDER | Oh, we recycled both of them! Yes, Adam Campbell (Great News) plays Young Ducky, and he’s just fantastic, and Sean Harmon plays Young Gibbs. CARDEA | Sean looks more and more like his dad every day. BINDER | And really sounds like him, too. That’s the thing that threw me. Sometimes he’d call and I was like, “OK, who am I talking to?”
TVLINE | Is the NCIS team living in any semblance of a COVID world? BINDER | We had an episode last year called “Musical Chairs” where Gibbs disappears from the squad room to go on a mission, and then he shows up at the end of the episode with a black eye. We are going to pick up the season with that mission that Gibbs was on, back in time, so we’re actually in a pre-COVID world for a little while. CARDEA | The first five episodes are set in that November/December 2019 period.
TVLINE | So in these first episodes, for example, we haven’t met Christopher Lloyd’s character yet. BINDER | No, but we’ll use that [Pearl Harbor] episode as sort of a very strong memory point in the audience for when we pivot to the present. The really bad version of that is “Gibbs comes back from Hawaii in sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt!,” but of course Gibbs would never wear something like that. But we’ll use that to sort of jump us back to the present, and we will be in a COVID world at that point. That won’t be until January, February. Probably February.
TVLINE | I would like to request generous use of chyrons so we can keep track. “This episode is set in the month and year….” and such. BINDER | We try to write these in a way where even if you were not following the timeline per se, you still have an episode where there’s a case and a body. It’s all the things that people love about NCIS without having to be caught up with exactly where and when you are. Hopefully we’ve succeeded at that.
TVLINE | What do you want to say about the storyline that will take Maria Bello off the show? BINDER | You know, one of the things we always ask when we’re trying to figure out how to exit a character is, “What does that character deserve?” Sloane is a very strong character, she’s a passionate character, and we’re going to really have her go out on a note worthy of that. I’ll say that.
TVLINE | You’ve got several options just based on the character’s established history, so… BINDER | Yes, and we’re going to dive into some of that history, for sure.
TVLINE | Do you feel like Jack is someone that you need to replace right away, in the capacity that she serves the team? Or is that something you’re going to deal with a bit further down the line, when you have a screaming need for such a character? BINDER | I think the latter. There’s a core team, and I think it was a function of Maria that we were able to find so much to give her to do. If it’s not Maria [in the role], then I don’t know if we need to necessarily fill it right away.
TVLINE | Are there any personal storylines for any characters early in the season? CARDEA | There are. We haven’t visited with McGee and his wife in a while, so they have a personal story early on — around the fourth episode, while we’re in that flashback time period.
TVLINE | When you teased a “reveal/development” in what was supposed to be last season’s finale, some fans speculated it would circle back to the Ziva storyline. Are there any plans to revisit Ziva and/or her ex-CIA confidante, Odette (played by Elayn J. Taylor)? BINDER | The Odette storyline certainly could be an independent story from Ziva. They’re not necessarily tied up one and the other, and we certainly have laid some pipe for continuing Odette’s storyline.
TVLINE | I have a reader asking if we’ll see Mr. Robert Wagner this season (as DiNozzo Sr.). CARDEA | RJ is always anxious to be on the show and we’re always anxious to have him — but with actors of that age, we’re just waiting to see where the COVID goes. RJ turned 90 in February— BINDER | And he would have to travel. CARDEA | — though he’s the youngest 90-year-old I’ve ever met. When you talk to him on the phone, he sounds like he’s 30. He’s not quite ready to come back yet, but you could certainly see him in the latter part of the year.
TVLINE | Is there any sort of a recurring adversary this season? BINDER | Not as of yet. It will be made clear in the premiere that there has been a recurring issue that Gibbs has been working on and is going to attempt to resolve, and of course it will be embodied in an adversary, but we’re going to deal with that and put that to bed mostly in the pre-COVID timeline.
TVLINE | And lastly, anything on the romantic front for any of the characters? CARDEA | Yes, in a couple of areas. BINDER | Sloane is of course leaving, so there’s been an ongoing wonderment of what’s going on between her and Gibbs — and I think we’re going to find that out. If it’s not now, then never, so I think it’s going to be now. CARDEA | We also always toy with the Bishop/Torres relationship, and there’s an episode that they’re featured prominently in.

NCIS: Sean Murray Teases McGee/ Delilah Caper, Action-Packed Return to That Season-Opening Shooting By Matt Webb Mitovich / January 17 2021, 1:00 PM PSTNCIS Sean Murray Courtesy of Brownstein PR
CBS’ NCIS resumes Season 18 this Tuesday with back-to-back episodes — one which turns a vacation into a husband/wife caper, followed by another that (finally) sheds light on why sniper Gibbs shot McGee in the season premiere.
TVLine spoke with series vet Sean Murray about Tim and Delilah’s unexpectedly eventful escape to the Bahamas, and the actor’s action-packed role in the resolution of the mysterious airport shooting, which he says will have “heavy” ramifications.
TVLINE | Delilah (played by Margo Harshman) is back! What’s the occasion? Well, we’ve got an episode where McGee and Delilah take off to the Bahamas, on a vacation… and fun ensues! [Laughs]
TVLINE | And playing the role of “the Bahamas” will be… what, Valencia, California? We did our best with the beautiful Palm Trees of Oxnard Beach. I think we did pretty good, from what I’ve seen, as far as selling the Bahamas.
TVLINE | And it is a case of TV serendipity that a case falls in their lap? Always. Always. It’s good, though, because it’s at least for a good reason. A case unfolds [back in D.C.] and it links to something in the Bahamas, so we get involved. But the original reason that Delilah and McGee go on vacation in the first place is because they’ve been married a couple years, they’ve got kids, so you hit that lull in the relationship. They’ve got to get their groove back. And this certainly helps!
TVLINE | Now if I’m Delilah and Tim is on the clock during vacation, I’m going to want to join in and do some sleuthing of my own. Does she get that chance? Absolutely. Delilah has her DoD skills, so absolutely. It’s been a little while since we had her doing her thing, and I love when we have Margo Harshman on. I love to play the domestic storylines for McGee, because it’s very different than what we usually do. It keeps it interesting, and it’s also fun to do.
TVLINE | On a far more serious note: We saw McGee get shot, by Gibbs, in the season premiere’s cold open — before the show time-jumped back to November 2019. I was frankly surprised by how many readers thought it would get resolved right away, who didn’t realize it would be a slow burn. Will we get more on that mystery soon? This is a double header this week, two new episodes back-to-back, and the second one is where we basically catch up to the point in time we showed in the teaser at the beginning of the season. We saw an abbreviated part of that sequence, and now we get to see all of what happens. It’s pretty cool, and I’m not just saying that to tease it. It is pretty cool.
TVLINE | The synopsis for that second episode (airing at 9/8c) says, “Gibbs and Vance let the team in on a case with dangerous implications.” Last season we show Gibbs going off on his own and disappearing for a bit, and the team didn’t know he was working with Fornell to infiltrate this opioid ring. This week the team finds out that’s what he has been up to, though we kind of figure it out at the same time he lets us in on what’s happening. So, we all are in for the big win on that, trying to resolve that.
TVLINE | Does the team’s debrief explain why Fornell suddenly had a hep ponytail? [Laughs] You know what, I had the same question.
TVLINE | Maybe Joe Spano didn’t want to get haircut during the pandemic? I don’t know — Fornell can be an odd character. But if anyone can pull it off, it’s him, I swear.
TVLINE | After the second episode, is the show set in the “present”? We’re caught back up to real time once that episode airs, yes. And we do eventually at some point get into the COVID, it is acknowledged. I don’t think we’re heavily acknowledging it, but I think it’d be dopey to act like nothing happened.
TVLINE | What’s funny is that every CBS show, including each NCIS show, is handling the pandemic a bit differently. New Orleans got deep into it, on Los Angeles it’s in the past, on MacGyver it’s in the past but they’re about to flash back to it. I, for one, would like Los Angeles to share with us how it went away. Right! I would like to know that as well.
TVLINE | In the two episodes coming up this week, was there anything new you got to do as an actor? You’ll see the extended version of what happens at the airport, and story-wise it’s pretty impactful. But just as far as the shooting of it, it was awesome. I got to do all kinds of stuff I hadn’t done before, especially as McGee — quite a bit of action stuff. I remember showing up the morning we shot that sequence, and for the first shot they say, “You’re going to be in a sedan behind that tower, you’re going to peel out around there, going left. You’re going to stay at about 30 miles-per-hour. There will be four airplanes slowly taxiing, you’ll pull to the right at 60 miles-per-hour. When you get to the fourth plane, donut to the left, where you stop the plane and jump out of the car.” And then they handed me the keys! Like, “Are you good with this?” I said, Let’s go for it.” It was a helluva day.
TVLINE | I often wonder how much driving actors get to do. I’m always trying to stare past the windshield. Obviously, you don’t want to put people in dangerous situations unless they are qualified to do that as their job, but there’s also this element of, “I don’t mind taking a couple of cuts and bruises if it’s going to look a lot better.” So as that sequence progresses, we were able to do a lot of really cool shots. I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but I was so into it. Like, “If we can get this, let’s just do it.” We ended up not using stunt people in that sequence, whereas normally they would have. But I wasn’t in any real danger.
TVLINE | Before we go, give me one last tease about what’s coming up…. We’re going to talk about why Gibbs shot McGee, and that’s going to be a pretty heavy subject. It’s a ball that gets rolling.

Sean Murray got an honorable mention in TV Line's Performer of the Week post.
HONORABLE MENTION | After watching the season-opening tease in which Gibbs shot McGee, many an NCIS viewer surely assumed that some sort of ruse was at play and everything would be hunky dory moments later. That was not quite the case — Gibbs came within a millimeter of ending his agent’s life while trying to save it — and Sean Murray week made clear the weight of that reality. Holed up while recuperating, Tim clearly had things to say when Gibbs came by with a dolly full of computer equipment. But it was not until at episode’s end, when Gibbs stopped by for a superfluous debrief, that the men exchanged hard words. “One millimeter,” Tim nodded, Murray’s expression conveying their shared acknowledgment of the gravity of that fact. Hell, even Gibbs was choked up. Then as McGee related and embraced Torres’ “close calls make you live harder” mantra, a warmth in Murray’s eyes let us know all would be fine between McGee and Boss.

Katrina Law Joins NCIS as Potential Series Regular for Season 19
One year after Hawaii Five-0 said aloha to the airwaves, Katrina Law is heading to another CBS staple.
The actress has joined NCIS‘ current 18th season in a recurring role, with the potential to become a series regular if the procedural is picked up for Season 19. (CBS has yet to announce a renewal decision.)
Per our sister site Deadline, Law will appear in the last two episodes of Season 18 as NCIS REACT Special Agent Jessica Knight, a “formidable” woman whose specialty is hostage negotiations. Raised by a single mother, and married to a stay-at-home dad who is raising their infant son, Jessica is described as “sharp, athletic, tough” and “fiercely tenacious,” but she also possesses a “wry sense of humor.”
Law’s casting comes on the heels of Maria Bello exiting NCIS after three seasons as forensic psychologist Jack Sloane. (In the March 2 episode, Jack decided to stay put in Afghanistan after completing an op, to help out the local community.) In addition to her Hawaii Five-0 appearances as Quinn Liu, Law’s small-screen résumé includes Arrow, The Oath and Training Day.
New episodes of NCIS air Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS. Last month, the network announced that spinoff NCIS: New Orleans will end with its current seventh season, while a new iteration of the franchise, set in Hawaii, is in the early stages of development.

Let alone another formidable woman

are you asking me for help, kaschu?
well, I honestly am in no position to give any “Casting choice” advice... first of all, I have absolutely no idea who Katrina Law is because I never watched one episode of Hawaii 5-0, so I don’t know what she can bring to the table acting wise...
the article mentions her in a recurring role for the last 2 episodes of Season 18, with the possibility of becoming a regular cast member for Season 19, should there be one...
the article states: “...Per our sister site Deadline, Law will appear in the last two episodes of Season 18 as NCIS REACT Special Agent Jessica Knight, a “formidable” woman whose specialty is hostage negotiations...”
though I am no longer a regular viewer I will give an opinion - as long as you asked... 😉
is there really any need to add another “regular cast member” to the show, especially one whose specialty is “hostage negotiator”? unless the writers intend to introduce hostage situations to the show on a regular basis it would seem a waste of a character - much like Jack Sloane was redundant as a forensic psychologist... Maria Bello, good actor though she may be, was a total waste of time on NCIS - a fifth wheel as it were... her character was tragic, confused, and quite often totally messed up… it seems the writers just didn’t know what to do with her, so they wrote her out with a very unspectacular, “meh” departure... sad, actually... 😕
so, there you have it - a bit of “casting opinion” from nas, (with a little bit of help from Maxine)...

For those who might be interested, the actress Katrina Law has appeared in other works outside of 5-0. A few years ago she had the lead in a Hallmark Christmas movie "The Snow Bride". Yes, it is a typical Hallmark film, but the story was pretty well told and she did a good job with the roll. I liked her in it.
As to her inclusion into the cast, I think she will be a good addition. If they do a decent job on integrating the "character" into the mix is a different discussion altogether. They didn't do a good job with "Reaves" or with with "Jack", nor really with "Quinn", though I liked her roll a lot more that I like "Torres". We will have to wait and see.

that’s the whole point, pdsmith... the writers don’t seem to “do a decent job” of integrating new characters into the show; the characters you mention, Quinn and Reeves, are perfect examples... they were both misused and shortlived, and dispatched in short order...
so, imho, there is no reason to believe that bringing in a new character, in the form of a hostage negotiator, will have any different result... what will they do with her when she’s not busy negotiating a hostage situation? her existence on NCIS will be pointless...

A hostage negotiator makes more sense as a "recurring Character" than as a "regular cast member." How often would they need a hostage negotiator? Or is she just going to take up space on non-hostage episodes?

Post by nas on Mar 13, 2021 1:42:16 GMT
yep, just as Tobias is/was a recurring character...
not very often, unless they make hostage negotiating a regular occurrence on the show...
that’s a definite “yes”... as I see it, she would definitely be “5th wheel material”, and probably pretty boring... 🤔 what new and interesting material would she bring to the party? family problems? marital problems? hidden life problems? been there - done that!

I might also point out that Eleanor Bishop is a decent character and the actress does a good job with her. It seems that NCIS just doesn't think she's a strong enough female character so they keep adding female roles (Quinn, Sloan, now the new role) as if to compensate for a weakness that doesn't exist. Let it alone, folks.
