I too found this episode not so bad. Some of you are extremely nitpicky. The show did stupid things thru the years (the whole Ziva liasonship on an investigative team, followed by her becoming a probie NCIS agent), depends on the writer. Some are better, others are worst. Blame Leon Carroll that he isn't doing his job. Or maybe he does and the writers just ignore him, after all this is just a tv show... Looks like Gibbs is set up to probably stay in Alaska for a while. And pdsmith777 I agree, dumping the dead oligarch in Gibbs lap is dumb. The girlfriend is as good a suspect as actually Bishop was (given her exit storyline). Could have been Bishop herself or she asked Odette. Gibbs had no motive. If Gibbs is out for a while next week, I'm not looking forward to the following episodes. I don't see McGee as a good team leader and Gary Cole doesn't do it for me. As FBI Agent he's in the wrong series as regular and he's not a good Mark Harmon replacement.

maybe the “growing negativity” is due to the disappointment that the loyal fans of NCIS are feeling, pdsmith...
I think you know I have quit this show and returned a couple of times because the realist in me just can’t handle the unbelievable plots, but like a bad smoking habit I just open up that pack, take one drag, and I’m back at it again... fortunately, watching NCIS isn’t deadly - just irritating! 😠
I don’t know how long a “Gibbsless NCIS mothership” would even last, pd... what are the odds?
for the life of me I don’t remember the episode that involved the drowned guy in the bathtub... refresh my memory, please...
we may not always see eye to eye on this show, but I always appreciate your well written POV

Episode in question is "On Fire." It's an episode in season 17. Makes little sense to show Gibbs remembering killing the man who had his wife and child killed, then remember a killing he didn't do. Makes more sense for him to remember 2 times he took "justice" into his own hands. Just a thought.

Just checked. It's episode 14. Sorry I didn't make that clear above.

ahhh, thanx, verdun!
I think this episode aired when I was taking a “time out” from the show... I looked it up on IMDb, and recall seeing the ep description, but don’t remember ever watching it...

I appreciate the compliment on my writing.
True, we don't always see eye to eye, which is always a prerogative of everyone, I just prefer less negativity.
I've been on something of a dry spell with the writing lately, and with NaNoWriMo coming up, maybe I'll try a fanfic with NCIS as my subject. I can fix the cast the way I want. Drop DiNozzo, Abby, and Kasey. Put Morrow back as Director, move McGee to the forensics lab, keep Ducky and Palmer, and make Gibb's team all female. Shephard, Kate, Quinn, and Ziva. Keep Bishop at the NSA as a consultant and use Torres undercover. This could work.

I agree that there has been a shift from the old IMDB boards years ago where many episodes had members that loved them and wrote very positive comments as well as people who did not care for them, and there was a lot more discussion or debate. Now the majority of the episodes have members on the board who are at best satisfied with an episode but usually more unhappy the show (I think Arizona was the last episode that I remember that was mostly positive). Like nas I think it is the difference in quality of the writing, the humor is not as sharp, and the storylines and personal issues of the characters are not as fresh. I have found this with most long running shows - I cannot think of one that I thought was as good at the end of a 10 season run as it was in the early years. That being said at least on this board the majority of the posts are opinion but not nasty or mean spirited, so I read what I want and scroll through the rest. I am much more likely to comment when I have enjoyed an episode than when I have not, but some of these its hard not to comment.

I think part of the problem is that NCIS has been on for so long, too long in my opinion. I know many still enjoy the show, and that’s fine. However, after so many years many don’t. The writing quality is not the same, the characters have changed so much, and just the overall feel of the show has changed. To me, it seems like a different show compared to the early years. I personally think NCIS should have ended, when the quality was better. I am sorry for those that still enjoy the show, but I would rather have seen it end when it was a stronger show, then now. For me, NCIS jumped the shark, and it’s not the same anymore. I like the company on here, and I still do like to see what’s happening even if I don’t watch anymore.

I wouldn’t put it at one specific thing, I think it’s an accumulation of different things over the years. The writing/storylines are not as good, there has been too many moments that are a stretch even for TV world, the cast change, and it being so different from the beginning. For me I would even include the drama with PP, (though only a little). What sealed it’s fate for me was the return of Ninja girl out of nowhere. From a PR standpoint I understand, but as a whole no.

Jump the shark moment? Bringing back Ziva after she was "dead" for several years. Yutz!

Jump the shark moment? Bringing back Ziva after she was "dead" for several years. Yutz! Ziva not being dead definitely MY “Jump The Shark”. She willfully killed DiZozzo’s career. She willfully kept a the pregnancy a secret. I haven’t watched since unless you count watching S1& S2 episodes on WETV. Does anyone watch The Resident? Now THAT’s how you write a departing actor’s character’s departure!

The progression of Harmon's exit is proceeding as expected. Fornell got to him last week, this week our suspect did an emotional and mental number on him. The trip to Alaska will be what either sends him off on a self discovery trip, either with or without Marcie, or ends him completely.
Either way, this will become a Gibbsless NCIS mothership.
I thought they did a better job with Knight and her role on the team, and while the move to the desk was forced, it's right. Kasey is still annoying, and Palmer only seems to be right when he's in Autopsy. I was actually as annoyed as Kasey with his behavior in the lab.
Other than that, the progression of the story is moving at the usual pace for the series, and the characters are seeming to gel into a cohesive team.
I think you're right about Gibbs' progression to leaving. It's just a matter of 'how.' I think the options are: 1. He disappears 2. He's arrested 3. He dies. 4. He retires
I do think that it's interesting what they're doing to him though. Ever since Judge, Jury... And Executioner (16x21 and 16x22) where he admitted to his team that he murdered Hernandez, Gibbs has been in a slow breakdown. Dr. Grace talked him off the ledge of turning himself in the first time but he's back to doing everything he can to get himself arrested again.
Ever since his wife and daughter were murdered, he's been doing what he could to bring criminals to justice. To do what couldn't be done for him. That was all right until he had to admit to his team that he had committed a crime that his team routinely arrested people for. He feels like a hypocrite (and he kinda is) and it broke him. He needs some serious therapy to break him out of his self-destructive cycle and really face the trauma of losing his wife and daughter. He even admitted to Jimmy that he hadn't made it past the anger stage of grief.
I keep thinking of an analogy of an addict. He needs to hit rock bottom before he asks for help. It's just a good question if Gibbs will get to that point before he gets himself killed.
I don't think that they'll kill Gibbs off. I don't think that they're going to close the door on Harmon coming back for an episode or two. I'm actually leaning towards Gibbs ending up getting committed because he's gone round the bend.
Having said that about Gibbs, I really enjoy the banter between Knight and Torres. They've really got good chemistry and comedic timing. Knight's time in the focus group was fun too. And I'm on her side. I don't want to smell like a flower all the time. I'm enjoying her addition to the team.
I'm also enjoying McGee as team lead. He's always done well when he isn't in someone's shadow.
Overall, I thought it was an interesting episode but it's clearly a part of a greater story. We're just going to have to hang on for the ride and see where it goes.

Binder has stated that Harmon is welcome back when ever he wants to be there. So we know that Harmon is leaving. "How", as you have speculated is the question.
1. I don't think they will kill him off. Bring him back as a ghost is getting cliché.
2. I don't think they will arrest him. Charges mean a trial and I don't think he wants to come back to do courtroom scenes. Just my opinion about that.
3. I think he retires, and moves to his cabin to rough it. In the process he makes arrangements for a lift to be built in the house from the basement to the second floor (or third, can't remember if there is a third floor or not). This way he can give Tim and Delilah the house and the show can keep the set.
I'm not sure what Pam's role will be in Gibb's departure, but since she is there, we'll see.
I'm fairly certain that the ratings will fall after Gibb's says farewell, it will then remain to be seen if CBS has the class to warn the production team they will end the series this year. If so, I can see Harmon returning for the last episode, along with Ducky. The fans will be extremely upset if Ziva doesn't make an appearance thus leading to speculation about Tony.
While difficult to have Weatherly return for one episode at the end of the year, it's not logistically impossible. I would take some special scheduling, red-eye flights, over night hotel stays, more scheduling magic and another red-eye to make it work, but it could.
Don't know if either production team would want to deal with the hassle but, CBS could demand it, so . . .
Over all, I would say my sister's automatic Christmas gift to me ends next year with season 19, I already know she's getting me season 18 this year.
Not to write an obituary this early in the season, but my observation is this will be the end of the mothership. It was a good run, and enjoyable for the most part. I'm not sure what will happen with this board when the show is over, but I doubt it will turn into an NCIS: Hawaii board
I would like to find one to discuss that show without all the negativity of this board.

@ llyan and pdsmith...
you have both given a “Gibbsless NCIS” wayyyy more thought - and print - than I could ever come up with... congratulations on your creativity!
my only thought on the situation is that I think it would be pitiful for the writers to continue on with the series if Harmon leaves the mothership... why draaaaaaag it out past it’s life expectancy? there’s a time for living, and a time for dying - if this show has died, then let it RIP!
re the end of this board, pd: maybe it will be time for it to end, too... it was fun while it lasted... I will miss my Fur Baby buddies, but I think we’ll figure out a way to keep in touch with stories and pictures when the time comes...
re discussion of NCIS: Hawaii: you could always start a new blog of your own, and make it a rule that “no negative posts and/or critiques are allowed”... easy, peasy!!
