There's a whole lot of mysteries in this episode. And then there's the case too.
Starting with Gibbs: Where did Gibbs go? Why would he leave his phone, wallet and badge behind? Ziva was mentioned again; did any of this involve her? Was it really about Emily Fornell? Or did it involve the drugs that caused Emily's overdose. McGee did mention that he got a lead on those drugs earlier this season. By the way, sturgeon season is in the spring. Pretty sure that Vance didn't buy it or that McGee didn't know anything more about where Gibbs was (even though he didn't.)
A smaller question but still intriguing: what does Faith need her family medical history for?
Finally, a couple of observations.
1. Musical Chairs seemed to apply not just to the band but also to the team roles this week. McGee took team lead, Ducky helped out in autopsy and as a profiler for Jack.
2. I didn't really miss Gibbs this week. The case was twisty and interesting enough that we were mostly through the episode before realized that Gibbs wasn't going to return to put in his patented Gibbs observation that was going to help them solve the case. Tim did a good job leading the team even if they did take a diversion into the nugget guy's conspiracy theory.
3. Neither of the Clarinetists were actually playing (not a surprise) but as a former band nerd (and a Clarinetist), poisoning the reed is a bit disconcerting.
Pretty good episode tonight. Not sure if I'll give it an A yet, but it was a solid B.

Gibbs broke his own rule on being unreachable by leaving his phone, not to mention the badge and wallet. That wouldn't be needed if it was JUST to be helping Fornell/Emily so I was thinking something Ziva-related until the Emily "explanation" at the end, but it's still gotta be more than just how it was in Daughters.

I could do without the Jack plotline (in fact, I could do without Jack, period), but the main plotline was interesting and I liked seeing the team sans Gibbs do the work on the case. That was refreshing.

Pretty good episode tonight. Not sure if I'll give it an A yet, but it was a solid B. 1. I'd say one more - Vance took over Gibbs role of getting sitreps from McGee, but combined it with his regular role of saying who was bugging him for results.
2. I didn't miss Gibbs either and wouldn't have minded one bit if they'd cut the elevator and coffee shop scenes and repurposed the time to hearing more of the band playing.
3. I figured they needed actors for both clarinet players, and even if they specified knowing how to play, actors will lie about such things. I'm more curious about the rest of the band (other than the conductor) as it would make sense to use actual musicians for the non-speaking parts, but nobody ever accused Hollywood of making sense. I was on the orchestra side, so I can often spot someone faking it with the band instruments if I'm specifically looking for it, but not when I'm not in the mindset like I wasn't tonight.

I would have enjoyed more band playing too. Really enjoyed the jazz.

Pretty good episode tonight. Not sure if I'll give it an A yet, but it was a solid B. Also as a clarinetist - I called the poisoning of the reed right away. A couple of quibbles though. You cannot tell the hardness of a reed just by looking at the front, as it is stamped on the back. Also, they band would not have their horns out (or most of them even with them) on the bus. I agree with you Llyan about the "Musical Chairs" aspect of the team roles, even Ducky taking Jack's role. It was odd that Gibbs left his wallet behind. I did not care for the gratuitous mention of Ziva - totally unnecessary!
This part is bugging me - I know the tune the band was playing (it's actually a blast to play) , but for the life of me, I cannot recall the name of it. It sucks getting old! EDIT "Sing, Sing Sing" by Benny Goodman!" How could I forget that!

Hmm, Jack's daughter is back... I’m hoping it’s good news like she’s pregnant & not because she’s dying.
