Well, that was a waste of time. Next week I'm going to find a ballgame to watch.

Too much focus on family interactions and establishing Lachey as a strong leader, too less focus on the case and then we have parts of being a bad imitation of Hawaii 5-0 action.
They wanted too much for the pilot. They should have focused on the case and bring the family/friends connections over the next few episodes.
And I can't stand the IT guy. The rest could work given time.

I looked at the User Reviews on the imdB website, and out of the 39 reviews today 27 of them were 1 or 2 (on a 1-10 scale)...
apparently, people aren’t terribly impressed with NCIS: Hawai’i...

I felt it was meh as well, but I admit to be biased against it. LA was backdoor piloted in NCIS Legend, already a fan of Chris from Batman and Scent of a Woman. LL from Halloween H20. New Orleans was backdoor piloted in Crescent City. Huge fan of Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap, Enterprise and Necessary Roughness and Lord of Illusions. Sold. This had no backdoor pilot, no connections, just felt wrong to start off. I give it 1 season tops.

The rest could work given time. I'm going to have to disagree with you on this. I felt the family focus was just right to start a series. Establishing that focus on two fronts didn't take away from the story at all, and follows what is now the politically correct format of introducing strong female leads who can have a career and family all at once.
I thought the rest of the cast did well for the first episode and we got a decent look at how the team functions. For a pilot episode and first show, I didn't think it was bad at all.
I never watched 5-0 so I can't comment on the comparisons there, but I did tire quickly of the tourism advertisement at the beginning of the show. Even if it did tie directly into the case.
I'll give it a year to mature, and I think it will make it past season one, quite possibly past season 5 to hit the 100 episode mark for rerun purposes, although that mark is less important than it used to be. (after all, we've gotten 55 years of Star Trek with just 73 episodes of the original series)
I did have one major problem with the episode, but hopefully that will be a minor issue in the future.

a shot & wounded Hawaiian cowboy?! 🤔 what does this case have to do with NCIS?
am I to understand that this team in Hawaii will be working civilian cases in addition to military ones? I guess there’s not as much military crime in Hawaii as there is in the D.C./Virginia area, eh? 😉

eta: why is she sitting on the horse/in the saddle like that? looks really weird! 🥴

Not sure what happened to the "cowboy" episode that was promoted here, but the episode that aired was pretty good. Didn't miss the annoying son. Not sure if he will become the eldest Cunningham child or not.
The scenery in the opening shot is probably what I will have to put up with, but again, I don't think this needs to become a Hawaii tourism spot.
Story was pretty good, yes, a lot of explosions, but some of us like that. Thought the story moved quite well, I also liked that they focused on the growth of two of the characters. I think Vanessa is doing a good job with this. Not sure I like that they are moving the relationship with the Navy guy this quickly, but it does seem to work a little, I'll give it a few episodes.
If there were a poll for this, I would give it a B+.

I was wondering the same thing, pd... then I read the air date in the post and the episode line-up on IMDb, and it’s actually scheduled for October 11th... mystery solved! 😊
I watched ep2, but don’t know if I’ll continue; this isn’t a “must see” show for me...
did they resolve the “major problem” you had with the pilot episode?
